Sebastian Vettel held the record for 16 years. Kimi Antonelli didn’t just beat it; he took more than three years off it.
The Mercedes driver clinched the 2026 world championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix aged 20 years, 68 days, in only his second season in Formula 1. He’s also the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Here are the five youngest world champions in F1 history, ranked by their age on the day they clinched the title.
Mercedes promoted Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement in 2025, when he was just 18, and his rookie year had its share of mistakes. Then the 2026 regulation reset arrived, Mercedes had the strongest car, and he took full advantage.
He won his first Grand Prix in China, became the sport’s youngest-ever championship leader after Japan, and won five in a row from that first victory.
He reached Mexico City with nine wins on the season and the title effectively in his pocket. He closed it out with races still to run.
Vettel didn’t lead the 2010 championship until the last race was over. He arrived in Abu Dhabi third in the standings, 15 points behind Fernando Alonso.
He won the race, while Alonso got stuck in traffic and finished seventh. It was the first of four straight titles with Red Bull.
Hamilton’s 2008 title was decided at the final corner of the season. He needed fifth at Interlagos, passed Timo Glock on the last lap, and beat Felipe Massa by a single point while Massa’s garage was already celebrating.
A year earlier, as a rookie, he’d lost the title by one point. He went on to win seven, equaling Michael Schumacher’s record.
Alonso broke the longest-standing record on this list. Emerson Fittipaldi had been the youngest champion since 1972, when he won at 25 years, 273 days.
Alonso took that mark when he finished third at the 2005 Brazilian Grand Prix with Renault.
His title also ended Michael Schumacher’s run of five straight, and he won it again in 2006.
Verstappen and Hamilton arrived at the 2021 finale in Abu Dhabi level on points. Verstappen won the race and the title by passing Hamilton on the final lap after a disputed safety car restart, and that started a run of four straight championships.
Oddly, the driver who still holds the record as F1’s youngest race winner is only the fifth-youngest champion.
Kimi Antonelli, who won the 2026 title aged 20 years, 68 days.
Sebastian Vettel’s. Vettel won the 2010 title aged 23 years, 134 days.
Max Verstappen, who won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix aged 18 years, 228 days.
Giuseppe Farina, who won the very first world championship in 1950. Alberto Ascari followed in 1952 and 1953, and Antonelli is the first Italian champion since then.
