Yan Xiaonan and Denise Gomes meet in the women’s strawweight co-main event at UFC Shanghai on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Yan is a 37-year-old former title challenger attempting to protect her place near the top of the division, while the 26-year-old Gomes arrives with 4 straight victories and a growing reputation as one of the weight class’s most dangerous punchers. Polymarket traders make Yan a modest favorite, but there is plenty of room for debate going into this matchup.
At the time of writing, Polymarket's prediction market prices Yan at 57¢ and Gomes at 43¢, representing implied win probabilities of 57% and 43%. The market has generated approximately $51,800 in trading volume, and prices can continue changing before the fight begins.
Fighter | Age | Height | Reach | Stance | Record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Denise Gomes | 26 | 5’2” | 63” | Orthodox | 12-3 |
Yan enters this fight after roughly 16 months away from competition. Her last appearance came against Virna Jandiroba at UFC 314 in April 2025, where she lost a unanimous decision by 30-27 on all 3 scorecards. Jandiroba completed 3 of 11 takedown attempts and disrupted Yan’s rhythm with pressure, clinch work, and ground control. It was a difficult matchup for a striker who performs best when she can set the range and dictate the pace.
That loss followed Yan’s unanimous-decision victory over Tabatha Ricci in November 2024. Across her last 5 appearances, Yan is 3-2, with victories over Ricci, Jessica Andrade and Mackenzie Dern. The Andrade win remains the clearest reminder of her offensive ceiling, as Yan stopped the former champion with punches in the first round. Her defeats in that span came against Zhang Weili and Jandiroba, both elite opponents with strong grappling attacks.
Gomes is taking a major step up after building a 4-fight winning streak. She defeated Eduarda Moura by split decision, Karolina Kowalkiewicz by unanimous decision, Elise Reed by second-round TKO, and Tecia Pennington by unanimous decision. Against Pennington, Gomes landed 53 of 138 significant strikes and completed 3 of 10 takedowns while recording 3:51 of control time. Those numbers show that she no longer relies solely on knockout power, although Pennington still outlanded her 58-53 in significant strikes.
Gomes averages 4.43 significant strikes landed and 3.16 absorbed per minute, with 49% offensive accuracy and 51% significant-strike defense. She also averages 1.45 takedowns per 15 minutes, though her 34% takedown accuracy suggests that wrestling is more of a secondary route than a dependable foundation. Her 66% takedown defense could matter if Yan mixes in reactive shots.
Yan lands 4.69 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 3.23. The more important figure is her 60% significant-strike defense, which is clearly superior to Gomes’ 51%. Yan also owns 73% takedown accuracy, although she attempts relatively few takedowns and averages 0.84 per 15 minutes. Her best work comes from quick entries, angled exits, and straight combinations rather than prolonged exchanges.
Gomes has the stronger striking ability. She owns 7 knockout victories in 12 professional wins and has scored 3 UFC knockdowns. She attacks the body and legs more consistently than many strawweights, which could slow Yan’s movement. The concern is that Gomes sometimes gives away clean counters while advancing, and her output declined in the third round across portions of her UFC sample. Yan is comfortable making small adjustments and accumulating scoring sequences without forcing a finish.
The age gap and Yan’s inactivity prevent this from being a higher-confidence prediction. Still, Gomes has never faced an opponent with Yan’s blend of speed, defensive awareness, and top-level experience. Unless the layoff has caused a steep decline, Yan should manage the exchanges from outside, force Gomes to reset, and bank at least 2 rounds. The most likely result is a competitive but clear decision for the former title challenger.
