Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong meet in a pivotal bantamweight main event at UFC Shanghai on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The UFC lists Nurmagomedov at No. 2 and Song at No. 6 in the division, making this a potential title-eliminator at the Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. Nurmagomedov brings suffocating chain wrestling, sharp kicks, and a 20-1 record. Song counters with physical strength, fast combinations, and enough power to punish a poorly timed entry.
As of August 27, Polymarket prices Nurmagomedov at 84¢ and Song at 17¢, representing implied probabilities of 84% and 17%, respectively. The event’s related markets have generated approximately $147,300 in trading volume. Because prediction-market prices can move quickly, the playable figure below matters more than the exact price available at publication.
My projected result is Nurmagomedov by unanimous decision. Song is dangerous enough to make several rounds competitive, particularly if he can force extended exchanges in open space. Still, Nurmagomedov has more reliable paths to winning minutes. He can score from kicking range, force Song backward with level-change threats, and turn close rounds in his favor through control along the fence.
Fighter | Age | Height | Reach | Stance | Record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Umar Nurmagomedov | 30 | 5-foot-8 | 69 inches | Orthodox | 20-1-0 |
Song Yadong | 28 | 5-foot-8 | 67 inches | Orthodox | 23-9-1, 1 NC |
Nurmagomedov has responded well to the only defeat of his professional career, a five-round decision against Merab Dvalishvili in their January 2025 championship fight. He followed that loss with victories over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo. His January 2026 performance against Figueiredo was especially impressive, as all three judges scored it 30-27 after Nurmagomedov dictated the exchanges on the feet and the mat.
Song’s recent run has been less consistent, though his latest appearance offered evidence of improvement. He lost a unanimous decision to Sean O’Malley in January, with all three judges returning 29-28 cards. Song found success through pressure, low kicks, and takedowns during the middle portion of that fight, but O’Malley’s range management and cleaner third round decided the result.
Song returned in May and submitted Figueiredo with a guillotine at 4:42 of Round 2. That was his first submission victory since his 2017 UFC debut and showed that opponents cannot treat his grappling as an afterthought. Song has also beaten Henry Cejudo, Chris Gutierrez and Marlon Vera during his UFC career, so Nurmagomedov is facing an experienced contender rather than a one-dimensional striker.
The central question is whether Song can keep enough of the fight in boxing range. His combinations are compact and powerful, and his counter right hand could punish Nurmagomedov if the favorite shoots from too far away. Song also carries his power late and has the physical strength to make individual takedowns difficult.
Stopping one attempt, however, is different from escaping Nurmagomedov’s full sequences. Nurmagomedov regularly moves from a single-leg attempt to a body lock, outside trip, or mat return without giving his opponent time to reset. Even failed entries can place Song against the fence, where his punching volume becomes far less threatening. Over five rounds, those exchanges should consume time and energy while making Song increasingly cautious about committing to combinations.
Nurmagomedov also has the stand-up skill to avoid treating this as a pure wrestling match. He lands 3.86 significant strikes per minute with 56% accuracy. His kicks to the body and head let him score from outside Song’s preferred punching distance, while his lower strike-absorption rate indicates cleaner defensive habits. Song may land the harder single punch, but Nurmagomedov is more likely to determine where the exchanges happen and how long they last.
The 84¢ Polymarket price leaves little room for mistakes, yet my 87.5% estimate still creates a 3.5% model edge. Nurmagomedov’s broader range of attacking options, 2-inch reach advantage, superior defensive statistics, and ability to blend striking with chain wrestling make him a sound prediction. Song should have dangerous moments, but Nurmagomedov is likely to control enough of the five rounds to earn a clear decision win.
