UFC Shanghai brings an all-action bantamweight pairing to the Oriental Sports Center on Saturday, August 29, 2026, as China’s Aoriqileng meets former RIZIN champion Kai Asakura. Both men fought in Macau on May 30, but their results could hardly have been more different. Asakura stopped Cameron Smotherman in 1:50 to secure his first UFC victory, while Aoriqileng suffered a second-round stoppage loss against Cody Haddon. Polymarket currently prices Asakura at 79¢ and Aoriqileng at 22¢. Here, we make our prediction in the markets for this fight.
Statistic | Aoriqileng | Kai Asakura |
|---|---|---|
Age | 33 | 32 |
Height | 5'7" | 5'8" |
Reach | 69" | 69" |
Stance | Orthodox | Orthodox |
Record | 26-13, 1 NC | 22-6 |
Aoriqileng remains a dangerous opponent despite his uneven UFC results. The Chinese veteran has gone 4-5 with one no contest inside the promotion, alternating between impressive offensive performances and bouts in which his defensive gaps have been exposed. His most recent five appearances produced two wins, two losses, and one no contest.
The Gibson victory demonstrated what makes Aoriqileng threatening. He read an inside leg kick, fired a straight right down the middle, and immediately followed Gibson to the canvas. He carries genuine power and is willing to exchange in close quarters. His career includes nine knockout victories, but 16 of his 26 wins have come by decision, showing that he can also maintain a working pace across three rounds.
His UFC statistics paint a less favorable defensive picture. Aoriqileng lands 4.40 significant strikes per minute with 49% accuracy, but he absorbs 5.66 per minute and defends only 46% of incoming significant strikes. He also averages 1.11 takedowns per 15 minutes, lands them at a 46% rate, and owns 59% takedown defense. Those numbers suggest activity and versatility, yet the negative striking differential is difficult to overlook against a fast, powerful opponent.
Asakura’s first two UFC appearances took place at flyweight and ended in second-round submission losses. Alexandre Pantoja submitted him with a rear-naked choke in his December 2024 title opportunity, while Tim Elliott used awkward movement, takedowns, and a mounted guillotine to defeat him in August 2025. Those results raised reasonable questions about Asakura’s defensive grappling against seasoned UFC opposition.
The move back to bantamweight looked much better for him. Against Smotherman, Asakura pressed forward behind quick entries and ended the contest with a right hand followed by a left hook. The stoppage improved his record to 22-6, with 14 knockout victories and three submissions.
Asakura has finished 17 of his 22 wins, reflecting a level of offensive danger that Aoriqileng has rarely faced during his UFC run. Asakura’s UFC statistics currently show 2.53 significant strikes landed and 3.34 absorbed per minute, along with 34% striking accuracy and 52% striking defense.
Aoriqileng’s clearest route is to mix takedown attempts with clinch pressure, disrupt Asakura’s rhythm, and turn the bout into a tiring three-round contest. If he simply agrees to trade at range, Asakura should hold the advantage in hand speed, combination punching, and finishing precision. Aoriqileng is durable enough to create tense exchanges, but his tendency to absorb clean punches makes him a risky opponent to support against one of the division’s hardest hitters.
My prediction is Asakura to win, with a second-round knockout or TKO the most likely individual result. His 79¢ Polymarket price leaves a 4% advantage against our model’s 83% estimate. That is enough to support the favorite, though the pricing is important when entering the market here.
