How Is CFL Betting Different Than NFL Betting?
CFL football is different from NFL football, XFL football, or any other kind of football. While each of the differences between the CFL and NFL may feel small, they can make major differences in how to bet on the league. The differences below are especially important when placing wagers on Canadian football in online sportsbooks.
Three Downs, Not Four
One of the biggest differences between the CFL and other football leagues is the fact that Canadian football only features three downs per offensive possession rather than four downs. That requires offenses to do the bulk of their work on first down, in order to set up manageable second down situations. Figuring out which teams are the most efficient on first and second down is incredibly important when betting on this league as a result.
The Rouge
Another huge difference between Canadian football and other leagues is the presence of the rouge. The rouge is a one-point play that takes place when a special teams unit kicks a ball into the end zone, and the opposition cannot return it. While these plays are worth just one point, one point can make a huge difference when point spreads and totals are hanging in the balance.
Different Field Sizes
The field in Canadian football is also 10 yards longer in the CFL than it is in other football leagues, with midfield being at the 55-yard line rather than the 50. The goal posts are also at the front of each end zone instead of being at the back of the end zone. That changes how offenses have to approach playing in the red zone, and also must be taken into account.
Using Rule Differences to Win
Here at ATS, we make sure to use the differences between the CFL and NFL to our advantage when placing bets. By developing an in-depth knowledge of every team in the league and how they function, we can identify value betting opportunities that those who do not watch CFL games cannot.
