In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know about sports betting in Utah, from the current legal landscape to alternative options for Utah residents who want to place wagers on their favorite sports.
By the time we're finished, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of sports betting in Utah, enabling you to make informed decisions and navigate the available options with confidence. So, let's dive in and embark on an exciting journey through the world of sports betting in the beautiful state of Utah!
The Supreme Court overturned the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May 2018, removing a federal ban on sports betting across the country. Since then, more than two-thirds of U.S. states have legalized sports betting in some capacity and authorized online or retail sportsbooks to launch within their borders. Unfortunately, Utah is not one of these states.
In fact, Utah is one of only two U.S. states that does not offer any form of legal gambling, the other being Hawaii. This means sports betting, casinos, betting on horse racing, poker, lotteries, bingo, and any other wagering option you can think of is strictly prohibited in the state.
Today, Utah is almost completely surrounded by legal sports betting states, with Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming all offering online or in-person wagering opportunities on sporting events. However, Utah legislators and state officials maintain their sturdy opposition to sports betting and all other forms of gambling.
Since the federal ban on sports betting was lifted in 2018, no attempts have been by Utah lawmakers to introduce new legislation that would legalize sports betting in the Beehive State. In 2019, Utah Senator David Hinkins made a proposal to allow horse racing betting within state lines, but the bill died early on before it could gain much traction.
As a result, it remains unclear when sports betting will launch in the state of Utah. Even with the recent wave of legalization of sports betting all over the country, Utah has not shown any inclination to change its anti-gambling stance.
Although anything is possible, it seems unlikely that Utah will join the growing number of states embracing legalized sports betting anytime soon. The state's strong historical opposition to gambling and its current legal landscape suggest that Utah residents may have to continue seeking alternative options for engaging in sports betting activities.
Although sports betting is not available in Utah, it's worth exploring some of the most popular sportsbooks available in nearby states. Let's take a closer look at a few of the leading sports betting sites that have captured the attention of bettors across the country.
FanDuel Sportsbook is a leading online platform for sports betting. With its user-friendly interface and extensive selection of sports and leagues to bet on, it has become the go-to option for sports bettors all over the country. FanDuel offers exciting promotions and bonus opportunities to both new and existing customers, and its reputation for reliability and trustworthy operations has solidified its position as one of the top sportsbooks in the industry.
Caesars Sportsbook is backed by one of the most recognized brands in the casino and hospitality industry. Known for its extensive market coverage and user-friendly platform, Caesars Sportsbook offers a seamless betting experience, including live streaming, in-play wagering, and a variety of promotional offers.
Unibet is a prominent international sports betting operator that has made its mark in the industry. With a sleek interface, a vast array of sports markets, and competitive odds, Unibet Sportsbook attracts bettors from around the world. It also provides additional features like live streaming and daily odds boosts to enhance the overall betting experience.
SuperBook Sportsbook is one of the fastest-growing platforms in the world of sports betting. It offers an extensive range of betting options, including prop bets, futures, same-game parlays, alternative lines, and much more. In addition, customers will get to enjoy first-rate customer service and speed payouts when they join the SuperBook community.
While sports betting may not be legal in the state, there are several alternative avenues for Utah residents who want to experience all the excitement offered in the world of sports betting. Here are a few of the different opportunities available today:
One option for Utah residents looking to bet on sports is to explore offshore sportsbooks. These are online platforms based outside of the United States that accept bets from individuals anywhere in the country. However, it's important to note that using offshore sportsbooks comes with certain risks and legal uncertainties, as these platforms operate outside of the jurisdiction of Utah's laws and regulations.
While traditional sports betting may be unavailable in Utah, daily fantasy sports (DFS) offers an alternative way to engage in sports-related competitions and potentially win huge cash prizes. Popular DFS platforms like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Underdog Fantasy operate legally in most states, including Utah, as they are considered games of skill rather than gambling.
Depending on where you live in the state and how you feel about road trips, your best option may be to visit neighboring states that have already legalized sports betting. Utah currently borders five states with legal betting options: Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming. In the next section, we'll further discuss each of these states and what they have to offer sports betting enthusiasts in Utah.
There are no online or retail sportsbooks available in the state of Utah; however, you'll find that your options really open up if you drive far enough in any direction. Utah is almost completely surrounded by states that have legalized sports betting and casinos in some capacity, with Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming all serving as viable options for residents of the Beehive State.
Sports betting was legalized in Arizona in April 2021 and launched in September of the same year. Utah residents in the southern half of the state may choose to sign up with any of the licensed online sportsbooks available in Arizona (DraftKings, Unibet, SuperBook, etc.) and take a quick trip down to the Grand Canyon State when they're ready to place their bets.
Colorado is one of the top states for sports betting, as there are over two dozen mobile sports betting platforms available to anyone located within state lines. All of the biggest names in the industry (FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, etc.) are operating in the Centennial State, and you'll also have the opportunity to visit retail sportsbooks in Black Hawk, Cripple Creek, Central City, and several other cities across the state.
Nevada is often considered the sports betting capital of the United States. Retail sportsbooks have been operating in the state since 1949, and Nevada was one of the few states that received an exemption on the federal ban imposed by the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.
Today, both online and in-person wagering options are available, but it is important to mention that Nevada is not a remote registration state. As a result, you'll need to register for an account with your online sportsbook in person with their partner casino in the state of Nevada.
Retail sports betting has been available in New Mexico since October 2018. Utah residents can visit the Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino in Santa Fe, Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino in Mescalero, Isleta Resort & Casino in Albuquerque, Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, or Santa Ana Star Casino in Bernalillo to place bets in person on all their favorite sports and leagues.
Last but not least, Wyoming has offered legal sports betting since September 2021 and is a great option for sports bettors in Salt Lake City or West Valley City. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars are all available to anyone who is 18 years or older and physically located in the state of Wyoming. Since Wyoming is a remote registration state, you can sign up for an account and get everything set up at home in Utah before taking a quick game-day drive across state lines to place your bets.
