Barcelona vs Aston Villa: Preview, Lineups & Analysis

Aston Villa have been the Champions League’s surprise package so far, and they take their perfect record to the Camp Nou on Tuesday.
Unai Emery’s side are second in the league phase with 9 points from 3 games, scoring 12 and conceding just 3, including a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce.
Barcelona have been far less convincing in Europe. Hansi Flick’s side sit eighth after a 4-2 defeat to PSG last time out, and haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five games.
At home, though, they have been almost unplayable, scoring 4.2 goals per game to sit top of La Liga.
Out: Jules Kounde, Xavi Espart, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Roony Bardghji
What Changes: With Kounde and Espart both out, Joao Cancelo continues at right-back. Anthony Gordon is set to replace Karim Adeyemi on the left, and Rodri should return alongside Pedri after being left out against PSG, with Frenkie de Jong dropping to the bench.
Out: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri
What Changes: Losing Wan-Bissaka and Ruggeri leaves Emery without his first-choice full-backs, so expect a back three with wingers Alysson Edward and Ibrahim Mbaye asked to cover the flanks. That could leave plenty of space for Lamine Yamal to attack.
GK: J. Garcia
DEF: Cancelo, G. Martin, Cubarsi, Balde
MID: Pedri, Rodri; Yamal, F. Lopez, Gordon
ATT: Raphinha
GK: Suzuki
DEF: Lindelof, Torres, Mings
MID: Alysson, Gomes, Barkley, Mbaye; McGinn, Buendia
ATT: Jackson
Lamine Yamal arrives on the brink of history. His goal against PSG was his 13th in the Champions League, equalling Kylian Mbappe’s record for a player under 20, and one more makes him the competition’s highest-scoring teenager.
He’s been just as good in La Liga, with 10 goals and 7 assists from 7.77 xG and 4.70 xA.
Villa will have wingers playing at wing-back on Tuesday. Against a player who has completed 43 dribbles and created 15 big chances this season, that is a big ask.
Raphinha has 15 La Liga goals in 10 appearances, and he’s taking his chances, with 19 of his 35 shots on target.
Pau Torres, Victor Lindelof and Tyrone Mings will have their work cut out. Villa have conceded 15.1 xG in the Premier League this season, the fourth-most in the division, and have kept just two clean sheets.
If Villa are going to hurt Barcelona, it will probably be on the break. Nicolas Jackson has five Premier League goals and three more in the Champions League, and he’s scored in his last two league games.
He’s also made 138 sprints this season, the most in Emery’s squad. Barca push their full-backs high, win the ball in the final third more than anyone in La Liga bar Sevilla, and have made just 2.0 saves per game, the fewest in the league. One ball over the top could be enough.
Key Metric (2026/27 domestic league, FotMob) | Barcelona | Aston Villa |
|---|---|---|
xG per game | 3.45 (38.0 total) | 1.21 (10.9 total) |
xG conceded per game | 1.06 (11.7 total) | 1.68 (15.1 total) |
Goals conceded per game | 1.1 | 1.4 |
Big chances created per game | 6.2 (1st in La Liga) | 2.0 |
Shots on target per game | 8.1 (1st in La Liga) | 3.0 (20th in Premier League) |
Average possession | 70.1% | 45.8% |
Possession won in final third per game | 5.3 | 2.7 |
Clean sheets | 4 | 2 |
Villa’s European form is at odds with their domestic numbers. In the Premier League, they’re 16th for xG, 17th for xG conceded and dead last for shots on target.
Barcelona are top of the pile in Spain for xG, big chances and shots on target. The only blemish is their finishing, with 38 big chances missed, also the most in the league.
On paper, this is a mismatch. But Villa have consistently made a mockery of advanced metrics over the years and this is unlikely to be the blowout some may expect it to be.
Player | Goals | Assists | xG | xA | Chances created |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Lamine Yamal (BAR) | 10 | 7 | 7.77 | 4.70 | 34 |
Raphinha (BAR) | 15 | 3 | 11.00 | 1.76 | 18 |
Nicolas Jackson (AVL) | 5 | 0 | 2.31 | 0.87 | 7 |
John McGinn (AVL) | 1 | 3 | 2.4 | 0.6 | 17 |
Twelve goals in three Champions League games is impressive, but the Premier League numbers tell a different story.
Villa have an xG difference of -4.1 in the league, and Jackson’s five goals have come from just 2.31 xG. That kind of finishing usually doesn’t last.
They’ve also failed to win either of their last two domestic games, including a 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Bournemouth.
For all their attacking brilliance, Barcelona have been leaky. They’ve conceded in each of their last five games, including four against PSG and two in the Clasico defeat to Real Madrid.
Their keepers have faced so little that 2.0 saves a game is the lowest figure in La Liga, which says as much about how Barca play as how they defend. When teams do break through, though, they tend to get good chances.
Villa have scored in all three of their Champions League games, and Polymarket has them at 68¢ to score at least once.
ATS Expert Verdict

“Villa's perfect European record hides some worrying Premier League numbers, and nobody in Spain creates more than Flick's side. Villa may well nick a goal, but Barca should have too much. My pick is Barcelona -1.5 at 60¢ on Polymarket.”
