Arsenal lead 1-0 on aggregate
Arsenal need only a draw to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the second successive season for the first time in their history. They earned a 1-0 first-leg lead in Lisbon thanks to substitute Kai Havertz’s 90th-minute finish from Gabriel Martinelli’s pass, a winner that came against the run of play in a tight, cagey affair that Sporting had chances to win.
Sporting come to the Emirates with Morten Hjulmand back from suspension after missing the first leg, and Arsenal arrive in their worst domestic run of the season. The one consistent thread is that Arsenal have not lost a single Champions League game this campaign. The Emirates on a European night, with a one-goal lead, should be enough.

- Prediction: Arsenal win
- Best Bet: Viktor Gyokeres anytime scorer (+175)
- Projected Score: Arsenal 2-0 Sporting CP (Arsenal advance 3-0 on aggregate)
- Confidence: 3/5
Arsenal vs Sporting CP Prediction and Pick
Arsenal are heavy favorites and rightly so. But the market is efficient here and the moneyline at -255 offers limited value given their recent form. The best play is Gyokeres anytime scorer at +175. He returns faces his former club having scored 97 goals in 102 appearances at the Alvalade, and Sporting must attack on Wednesday night. That opens space for Arsenal in transition, and Gyokeres thrives on exactly those opportunities.
Arsenal vs Sporting CP Head-to-Head
Arsenal are unbeaten in all six previous European meetings with Sporting, winning three and drawing three. The most recent prior to this tie was a 5-1 Arsenal win in Lisbon in last season’s Champions League league phase. Sporting have never beaten Arsenal in European competition.

Arsenal vs Sporting CP Match Preview
Arsenal’s form is poor but their European record is not
Arsenal have lost three of their last four games in all competitions, including a Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City, an FA Cup exit to Championship side Southampton, and a 2-1 Premier League home loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The quadruple is long gone and there are genuine questions about whether this squad has the depth and fitness to perform consistently under Arteta. Odegaard, Saka, Timber and Calafiori are all doubts for Wednesday, leaving the team a shadow of its full-strength self.
And yet in the Champions League, Arsenal have won 9 of their 10 games this season without conceding a defeat. They have not trailed in a Champions League game for two months. The Emirates on a big European night is a different environment to the Premier League, and a one-goal advantage with the prospect of a semi-final against Atletico Madrid or Barcelona is motivation enough. Arteta said after the Bournemouth defeat that the squad needs “everybody fit and available immediately.” Wednesday is the moment that matters.
Sporting Pose a Threat
Sporting are not here by accident. They beat PSG twice in the Champions League league phase this season and overturned a 3-0 deficit against Bodo/Glimt in the last 16, winning 5-0 in the second leg. They were the better side for long stretches of the first leg and Raya was the reason the scoreline read 1-0 rather than 1-1 or worse. Suarez has 33 goals this season as Gyokeres’ replacement and is a handful for any defence. Hjulmand’s return from suspension is significant. The Danish midfielder was absent in Lisbon and his presence in the double pivot will make Sporting considerably harder to break down.
That said, Sporting’s task here is stark. They need to score twice without reply, or at least once and ensure Arsenal do not score. At the Emirates, against an Arsenal side that has kept clean sheets in the majority of their European games this season and with Saliba and Gabriel at centre-back when fit, that is a tall order.
The Gyokeres subplot
Viktor Gyokeres returns to face his former club, where he boasted a remarkable scoring record. He scored 97 times in 102 appearances and Sporting had to rebuild their entire attack around Suarez in his absence. His relationship with the Sporting fanbase travelling to London will be charged given the fraught nature of his departure, and he will want to produce. In the first leg at the Alvalade he was largely quiet, managing just nine touches in the first half. At the Emirates, against a Sporting side that must attack, he will have far more space to operate.

Betting Insights
| Market | Odds | Implied Probability | Projected Probability | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arsenal win match | -255 | 72% | 62% | -10% |
| Draw | +390 | 20% | 24% | +4% |
| Sporting CP win | +550 | 15% | 14% | -1% |
| Arsenal to advance | -700 | 87% | 86% | -1% |
| Over 2.5 goals | -135 | 57% | 50% | -7% |
| Under 2.5 goals | +105 | 49% | 50% | +1% |
The market is efficient on this one and there is no standout edge on the main lines. Arsenal are overpriced on the moneyline given their poor domestic form and injury list, while the draw carries slight positive value at +390. The best approach is to look at player props rather than the match result markets. Under 2.5 goals is a marginal play at +105, consistent with the cagey first leg and the probability that Arsenal, needing only a draw, may set up conservatively once ahead.
Player Props
- Viktor Gyokeres anytime scorer (+175) – Returns to face his former club in a game where Sporting must attack, creating space on the counter. Scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. Motivated and in the right conditions to produce.
- Declan Rice anytime scorer (+450) – Has chipped in with goals this season from midfield and will be Arsenal’s leader with Odegaard doubtful. At set pieces with Sporting needing to press, the opportunities could come.
- Luis Suarez anytime scorer (+280) – 33 goals this season, Sporting’s main threat. If they get into the game he will be involved.
Arsenal vs Sporting CP Model Projection
- Score Projection: Arsenal 2-0 Sporting CP
- Match Win Probability: Arsenal 62%, Draw 24%, Sporting CP 14%
- Aggregate: Arsenal advance 3-0
Arsenal’s European form holds and the Emirates does the rest. Gyokeres finally makes his mark against his old club, Sporting are unable to find a way past Saliba and Gabriel, and Arsenal reach the semi-finals. The poor domestic form is a concern and the injuries harm The Gunners’ depth, but 9 wins from 10 CL games does not happen by accident. Arteta’s side know how to perform in this competition when it matters.
Arsenal vs Sporting CP FAQs
Arsenal are projected to win the second leg at 62% and advance on aggregate with an 86% probability.
Viktor Gyokeres anytime scorer at +175, given his motivation, his history with Sporting, and the space that will open up when Sporting are forced to attack.
