Napoli host Bologna on Sunday needing to stabilize an uneven start to the Serie A season. The defending champions have taken only three points from their opening three league games, losing to Como and Inter after beating Genoa, while Bologna remain winless despite producing considerably better underlying numbers than their results suggest. The biggest discrepancy is in expected-goal differential: Napoli are at 4.60 xG and 5.55 xGA (-0.95 xGD), while Bologna have produced 4.88 xG and allowed only 2.21 xGA (+2.67 xGD). That makes Bologna +1.5 considerably more interesting than their 15th-place league position suggests.
Why Our Model Sees Value

“Simply put, the early underlying numbers do not support the pricing gap between these teams. Bologna have created more xG, conceded less than half as much xGA and outshot Napoli 51-42 through three games, yet they are priced at 73¢ simply to avoid losing by two goals. Napoli also enter after a midweek Champions League fixture and remain without Scott McTominay. Our projection gives Bologna +1.5 an 80% probability, leaving a meaningful edge over the current market.”
Polymarket Pricing
Napoli are currently 55¢ to win, Bologna 20¢, and the draw 27¢. The handicap market is more attractive, with Napoli -1.5 at 29¢ and Bologna +1.5 at 72¢. Under 2.5 goals is priced at 55¢, while Over 2.5 sits at 46¢. Napoli should be favored because of home advantage and their stronger squad, but a 29% probability of winning by two or more looks aggressive when Bologna have conceded only 2.21 xGA in three matches. Bologna have not simply sat deep either: they have generated 51 shots, 13 on target and 91 touches in the opposition box, all while averaging 59.5% possession.

Bologna's winless start looks poor, but they have won the xG battle across each of their opening three matches. Against Lazio they created 1.87 xG despite losing 1-0, followed that with 1.06 xG at Atalanta, then produced 1.95 xG and 21 shots in the 2-2 draw with Sassuolo.
This points to a conversion problem rather than chance generation. Bologna rank sixth in Serie A for xG, have taken 17 shots per game and are fifth for touches inside the opposition box. A repeat of that attacking volume should make it difficult for Napoli to control this game completely.
Napoli's attacking numbers have improved game by game, rising from 0.77 xG at Genoa to 1.37 against Como and an impressive 2.46 at Inter. The concern is what has happened at the other end.
They conceded only 0.66 xGA against Genoa, but Como generated 1.03 xG, before Inter exploded for 3.86 xG and 29 shots. Napoli have therefore allowed 5.55 xGA in three league games, equivalent to 1.85 per match. Bologna may lack Inter's finishing quality, but their 4.88 xG and 51 shots suggest they are capable of testing those weaknesses.
Possession is another interesting contrast. Bologna are averaging 59.5%, compared with Napoli's 44.5%, and have completed 520 passes per game at 91.4%. That does not mean Bologna will dominate at the Maradona, but it does show they are comfortable keeping the ball rather than relying solely on transitions. That could be important after Napoli's Champions League game with Arsenal. If Bologna can force the hosts to defend longer possessions rather than allowing them to dictate tempo, the physical advantage should increasingly favor the visitors as the game progresses.
Napoli will again be without Scott McTominay after the midfielder underwent a planned heart procedure. He is expected to miss both the Arsenal and Bologna games, removing one of Napoli's most effective runners into the penalty area and an important part of their midfield physicality.
That absence matters against a Bologna side whose midfield is already producing large possession numbers. Napoli still have enough quality to win, but their ability to turn territorial pressure into second-ball recoveries and late box entries is reduced without McTominay.
Napoli have greater individual attacking quality, but Bologna have produced the stronger process through three league games. Their +2.67 xGD compared with Napoli’s -0.95, combined with a major advantage in xGA, suggests this should be more competitive than the league table or club reputations imply.
The moneyline at 55¢ is difficult to oppose outright because Napoli remain the most likely winner at home. The handicap is different. Bologna only need to avoid a two-goal defeat, and a team allowing just 0.74 xGA per game should not be priced as though a comfortable Napoli victory is particularly likely.
At 73¢, Bologna +1.5 is the clearest value play.
