Sunderland host Arsenal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday with the defending Premier League champions still perfect through three league matches. Arsenal have beaten Coventry 3-0, Aston Villa 1-0 and Chelsea 2-1, then followed that by grinding out a 1-0 Champions League win away at Napoli on Wednesday.
Rather than laying a heavy price on Arsenal to win, the more appealing angle is whether Sunderland score at all. Polymarket currently prices Sunderland Under 0.5 goals at around 51 cents, effectively asking traders whether Arsenal can keep another clean sheet at close to a coin flip. Given what Arsenal have allowed so far, that price deserves attention.
Editor's notes

“I’m not especially interested in laying a short price on Arsenal here. The angle I prefer is Sunderland Under 0.5 goals at around 51¢ on Polymarket, because Arsenal have been extremely good at limiting high-quality chances and Sunderland have not consistently created much from open play. Sunderland have enough attacking threat to make this uncomfortable, but at close to a coin flip, I think Arsenal keeping them scoreless is the better way to play the matchup.”
Arsenal are giving opponents very little
Mikel Arteta’s side have looked strong defensively to start the season, limiting the quality of chances they allow rather than just relying on possession. That makes Sunderland’s path to a goal narrower than it may seem at first glance.
Sunderland’s scoring record needs context
Sunderland have found the net in each of their league matches, but they have not consistently created a high volume of dangerous chances in open play. Against a defense like Arsenal’s, that margin for error gets even smaller.
This angle is cleaner than the moneyline
Arsenal are deserved favorites, but the straight win price is not especially attractive. Sunderland Under 0.5 Goals isolates the strongest part of the matchup: Arsenal’s defensive control against a newly promoted side facing a major step up in class.

Sunderland Under 0.5 Goals

Market-Implied Probability

Alternative Market
Under 2.5 goals is 54¢ on Polymarket
The team total is preferable to the full-game Under 2.5 because it isolates what appears to be the strongest part of the matchup: Arsenal's defense against Sunderland's attack. A 3-0 Arsenal win would lose the standard under but still cash this position. The obvious counterargument is that Sunderland have scored in every Premier League game this season and managed two against Arsenal at the Stadium of Light last November. Arsenal are also without William Saliba, while Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera have been dealing with fitness issues. That stops this from being anything close to a certainty. At around 51 cents, however, the price does not require certainty.
Prediction: Sunderland Under 0.5 Goals
Arsenal are trading around 67 cents to win on Polymarket, but that means paying a considerable premium for the obvious side. The Sunderland team total provides a different way into the matchup.
At roughly 51 cents, Sunderland Under 0.5 goals translates to approximately a 51% market-implied probability. That looks more attractive when Arsenal have kept clean sheets in three of their four competitive matches this season.
Even the exception needs context. Chelsea scored in the opening two minutes of their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal. Chelsea generated only around 0.4 xG for the match.
Sunderland have scored once in each of their three league games, so this is certainly not a bet based on them being incapable of creating chances. The argument is that Arsenal represent a significant step up from Ipswich, Fulham and Brentford.
The defensive results are impressive, but the underlying numbers are more important.
Across Arsenal's opening two league matches against Coventry and Aston Villa, opponents managed just one shot on target in total. Chelsea then produced more attacking volume but still finished around 0.4 xG despite taking 13 shots, illustrating how Arsenal can concede possession or attempts without allowing many genuinely dangerous chances.
Napoli encountered the same problem on Wednesday. Arsenal controlled long spells of the Champions League game and left Italy with a 1-0 win and another clean sheet.
That defensive control matters more here than Arsenal's attacking ceiling.
Sunderland have scored three goals in three Premier League matches, but the raw total requires context.
They produced less than one xG in their opening 2-1 defeat at Ipswich. Their attacking performance improved considerably in the 1-0 home win over Fulham, but their equalizer in the 1-1 draw at Brentford came from an Enzo Le Fée penalty. BetMGM noted that 0.69 of Sunderland's 0.9 post-shot xG in that match came from the spot.
Sunderland were competitive in all three games, but consistently creating high-quality open-play chances has been more difficult than the simple “scored in every game” statistic suggests.
Habib Diarra's thigh injury also removes one midfield option for Régis Le Bris, although deadline-day arrival Malick Fofana gives Sunderland another direct attacking threat after making his first start in Tuesday's 1-0 League Cup win over Hull.
Arsenal have had limited recovery time after playing in Naples on Wednesday, which is partly why Saturday's kickoff was moved to 8 p.m. local time.
That schedule does not necessarily point toward an Arsenal defeat. It could instead encourage exactly the type of controlled performance that suits this bet.
Arteta's side already showed at Aston Villa that they are comfortable winning without turning the game into an end-to-end contest. Arsenal created only around 1.1 xG in that 1-0 victory, according to BetMGM's match data, but the defensive structure allowed them to protect the lead.
A similar script at Sunderland would be ideal.
For Sunderland Under 0.5 goals to cash, Arsenal do not need to dominate for 90 minutes. They need to prevent Sunderland's transitions from developing into high-quality shots and avoid handing the home side cheap opportunities from penalties, set pieces or defensive mistakes.
The strongest argument against the bet is Sunderland's resilience at home. They beat Fulham 1-0 this season and held Arsenal to a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light last November. Arsenal are also operating without Saliba, which removes an important piece of their first-choice defense.
Still, a price around 51 cents appears to underrate just how difficult Arsenal have been to create against. Instead of paying 67 cents for the Arsenal moneyline, the cleaner position is to back another defensive performance.
Prediction: Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal
