As the women’s ice hockey competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina reaches its conclusion, the bronze-medal game on Thursday will pit Sweden against Switzerland. Following semifinal defeats, both teams now turn their focus to securing a podium finish. Sweden’s last Olympic women’s hockey medal came two decades ago with a silver, and the Swiss are chasing their second-ever Olympic women’s medal after capturing bronze in 2014. Before this matchup begins in Italy, you will find my Sweden vs Switzerland prediction below.
Pick: Sweden to win ATS PRO
Confidence: ★★★★☆
Sweden entered the Olympic knockout rounds with strong group play results, winning all four group games with multiple high-scoring performances and a solid defensive record. However, their semifinal against the United States ended in a 5-0 loss, a result that highlighted a gap when matched with the very top teams in women's hockey. Despite that setback, the Swedes have a chance to grab a medal in what has been a very good tournament for them overall.
Switzerland’s run has been marked by tenacity and clutch performances. A quarterfinal upset against Finland came via a 1-0 victory sealed by star forward Alina Müller. That propelled them into medal contention, and their semifinal against Canada was competitive despite a 2-1 loss. Switzerland’s trend of grinding out low-scoring contests should keep this game tight, but it also suggests a battle of defensive discipline more than a high-offense affair.
Goaltending will be a defining element of this bronze medal matchup. Sweden’s netminders had solid showings through much of the tournament before facing a potent U.S. attack. They will need to rebound here to give the team its best chance of grabbing bronze. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s goalie Andrea Braendli has been a backbone for her squad, delivering standout performances, including a 40-save effort to hold Finland scoreless in the quarterfinals. Her ability to frustrate shooters and keep games within reach gives Switzerland a fighting chance here.
Switzerland’s leaders, Alina Müller and captain Lara Stalder, bring not just experience but a track record of success at the Olympic level. They have been instrumental in the nation’s only women’s hockey medal performance in 2014. Their presence raises Switzerland’s competitive ceiling. On Sweden's side, the question will be whether or not they can bounce back offensively after being shut out by Team USA. The top player for the Swedes has been Hanna Olsson, who leads her team with three goals and four assists entering the bronze medal game.
Score Projection: Sweden 3 – Switzerland 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: Sweden 58%, Switzerland 42% ATS PRO
I think we are in for a low-scoring and intense game for the Olympic bronze medal in women's hockey. Sweden has more offensive firepower and should be able to grab a win when all is said and done in this contest. I'll take the Swedes to win on the moneyline in a game that could come down to the wire in Milan.
