The Olympic gold medal game in women’s hockey between the United States and Canada on Thursday is a classic North American rivalry game with a gold medal on the line. Both teams survived fierce semifinal tests to reach the title game at the Milano-Cortina Olympics and will once again vie for winter glory in front of a worldwide audience. Team USA is a heavy favorite after dominating this tournament so far. Can the Americans finish the job and grab gold? Continue reading to get my USA vs Canada prediction in the gold medal game right here.
Pick: Over 5.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: 4/5
Team USA enters the final having outscored opponents 31-1 through six Olympic games while recording five straight shutouts, including a 5-0 semifinal win over Sweden. They crushed Canada 5-0 earlier in the tournament in group play, a historic result that marked Canada’s first Olympic shutout loss and the largest margin in this rivalry’s Olympic history. The Americans have looked virtually untouchable on both ends of the ice and sit atop the scoring charts with balanced contributions from multiple lines.
Canada hasn't looked as convincing as the United States in this tournament. The Canadians defeated Switzerland 2-1 in the semifinals, scoring two goals in the second period before allowing the Swiss to get back into the game with a goal in the third. Canada will need to play better than it has all tournament to get the win in this gold medal matchup.
One of the biggest reasons for the United States’ run has been netminder Aerin Frankel, who has posted an Olympic-record stretch of shutout minutes, allowing only one goal across six games while stopping a high percentage of shots. That kind of reliability in goal provides a clear edge in a game where tight defense can dictate the outcome. Canada counters with its own experienced crease presence in Ann-Renee Desbiens, but the sheer consistency and form of the U.S. goalie has been a defining story of the tournament.
Caroline Harvey has emerged as a catalyst for the Americans, leading the tournament in points among U.S. players with elite two-way play and generating offense from the blue line. Hannah Bilka and Abbey Murphy have been impactful forwards, producing goals and assists at key junctures, while Hilary Knight provides veteran leadership and scoring touch.
For Canada, captain Marie-Philip Poulin set a new Olympic points record in the semifinal and is her team's emotional and offensive heart. The question will be whether or not she can orchestrate enough offense to help her team grab the gold in this spot.
Score Projection: United States 4 – Canada 2 ATS PRO
Win Probability: United States 62%, Canada 38% ATS PRO
This gold medal showdown is one where the United States’ dominant form and stellar goaltending make them the logical choice to take the gold. Canada will counter with heart and experience, particularly through key leaders like Poulin, but the Red, White, and Blue have repeatedly imposed their will on the tournament’s biggest stages. The pricing for Team USA isn't worth betting here, so my top pick in the betting markets is for this game to go over the total of 5.5 goals.
