Kraken vs Red Wings Prediction: Can Detroit Build on Its First Win?

The Detroit Red Wings welcome the Seattle Kraken to Little Caesars Arena on Friday, October 9, looking to build on their first victory of the season. Detroit improved to 1-2-0 with a 5-3 win over Ottawa, while Seattle arrives at 2-2-0 following a disappointing 6-2 defeat against Vegas.
Two projected bottom-feeders (pun intended) square off on Friday night, each hoping to prove the experts wrong. Could either team surprise us this season? Only time will tell.
For tonight, prediction markets favor Detroit, with the Red Wings trading in the high-50¢ range on Polymarket at the time of writing on Friday morning. Seattle sits in the low-40¢ range despite its stronger record, reflecting concerns about the Kraken's defensive performance and their recent struggles against more talented opponents.
Detroit is my projected winner, although its current market price leaves limited room for an attractive entry. Seattle's offensive start makes this a potentially competitive matchup, but the Red Wings have the stronger underlying numbers and home-ice advantage.
The latest available pricing favors Detroit, although the two platforms have shown some differences.
Polymarket's pricing is close to my estimated probabilities, leaving little obvious advantage on either side. An earlier Kalshi snapshot showed Detroit closer to 52¢, which would be considerably more interesting if that price remains available.
Liquidity and trading fees also need consideration. A small theoretical advantage can disappear quickly when the entry price, spread and execution costs are included.
The Red Wings opened the season with consecutive losses against the Rangers and Jets, scoring only twice across those games. However, Tuesday's 5-3 victory over Ottawa offered a more encouraging picture of Detroit's offensive potential.
Dylan Larkin returned from injury and immediately made an impact, contributing a goal and an assist. Alex DeBrincat added two goals and an assist, while Lucas Raymond collected three assists. Veteran addition Viktor Arvidsson also contributed a goal and an assist, giving Detroit several dangerous offensive combinations.
The Red Wings' underlying numbers have been stronger than their 1-2-0 record suggests. Detroit has generated approximately 57.8% of even-strength shot attempts and 64% of high-danger chances through three games, indicating that its early results have not fully reflected its territorial performance.
It's still early, and those numbers come from a small sample, but they support the argument that Detroit is capable of producing more consistent results if its finishing improves.
Seattle started the season with two victories in its first three games, scoring 13 goals during that stretch. However, Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Vegas exposed several weaknesses, particularly on special teams and in defensive coverage.
Joey Daccord allowed five goals on 21 shots before being replaced by Philipp Grubauer. The Kraken also struggled to establish consistent offensive pressure, with Shane Wright and Jared McCann accounting for their only goals.
Seattle faces another challenge following the loss of defenseman Ryan Lindgren, who has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss four to six weeks. His absence leaves the Kraken with less experienced defensive combinations and could weaken an already inconsistent penalty kill.
There are still positives for Seattle. McCann has five points through four games, while Jordan Eberle has recorded a point in each of the team's opening four contests. Young forwards Berkly Catton and Mackie Samoskevich have also shown encouraging offensive potential, giving the Kraken enough talent to threaten Detroit if they can create opportunities in transition.
Team | Goalie | Status |
|---|---|---|
Seattle Kraken | Joey Daccord | Projected, unconfirmed |
Detroit Red Wings | John Gibson | Confirmed |
Detroit will start John Gibson, who enters with a 1-2-0 record, a .903 save percentage and a 2.38 goals-against average. Gibson stopped 22 of 25 shots against Ottawa and has generally provided respectable goaltending despite Detroit's uneven start.
Daccord is projected for Seattle, although his status has not been confirmed. He has recorded a .911 save percentage through three starts, but his performance against Vegas raises questions about whether the Kraken might turn to Grubauer instead.
The goaltending matchup is unlikely to create a significant advantage by itself, although Gibson's confirmed status gives Detroit greater certainty heading into Friday.
Detroit's ability to control possession against Seattle's depleted defense could be the determining factor. The Red Wings have produced considerably stronger territorial numbers through the opening week, while Seattle has relied more heavily on finishing efficiency.
Three factors stand out:
Seattle has enough offensive depth to make this competitive, but the Kraken have generated only 42.1% of even-strength shot attempts through four games. Unless that improves, Detroit should have more opportunities to establish sustained offensive pressure.
Prediction: Detroit Red Wings to Win
Category | Projection |
|---|---|
Predicted Winner | Detroit Red Wings |
Red Wings Win Probability | 57% |
Kraken Win Probability | 43% |
Potential Value Position | Detroit Red Wings |
Detroit Entry Threshold | 53–54¢ |
Current Recommendation | Wait for the right price on Red Wings |
Detroit is my pick to win Friday's matchup. The Red Wings have produced stronger underlying numbers, Larkin looks like he actually wants to play for this team again, and Seattle's defensive injuries could create opportunities for Detroit's top forwards.
However, the prediction market price is important. With Detroit trading around 57¢ on Polymarket, the contract is already close to my estimated probability of a Red Wings victory. That leaves little potential advantage after accounting for fees and execution costs.
My preferred approach is to look for Detroit at 53–54¢ or lower. If Kalshi still offers a price close to its earlier 52¢ quote, the Red Wings could represent an attractive position, provided the available liquidity and fees make the trade worthwhile.
Otherwise, Detroit remains the more likely winner, but there is no compelling reason to enter at the current Polymarket price. Seattle's offensive potential makes the Kraken a legitimate threat, even if the overall matchup favors the home team.
