Islanders vs Rangers Prediction Market Preview: Is the Rangers Price Too High?

The New York Rangers enter Tuesday night's rivalry matchup at Madison Square Garden as the prediction-market favorite, with their win contract trading in the high-50¢ range.
The Rangers have earned that position after winning three straight games, while Igor Shesterkin has opened the season in excellent form. But the Islanders are coming off a 6-0 win over New Jersey, swept all four meetings with the Rangers last season and could make this much closer if Ilya Sorokin gets the start.
At the current price, the Rangers look more fairly valued than undervalued.
Kalshi currently gives the Rangers a 56% market probability, with Rangers Yes available around 58¢ and Islanders Yes around 44¢.
That is close to where I have the matchup before the Islanders confirm their starting goalie.
The current Rangers price already reflects home ice, their strong start and Shesterkin's presence in goal. I would therefore need a better entry before taking a Rangers position.
New York dropped its opener against Boston but has responded with three consecutive victories. The Rangers have outscored their opponents 11-3 during that run and remain unbeaten at Madison Square Garden.
The offseason additions are already contributing. Eeli Tolvanen has scored three times, while Pavel Dorofeyev has also found the net and Adam Fox leads the Rangers with four assists.
The biggest advantage, however, may still be in goal.
Igor Shesterkin has been confirmed to start Tuesday. He enters the matchup with a .934 save percentage and 1.67 goals-against average through three appearances, and was named the NHL's First Star of the Week.
That gives the Rangers one of the strongest foundations possible in a matchup that could be decided by relatively small margins.
The Islanders have played only twice, opening with a 2-1 loss against Toronto before producing a much more convincing performance against New Jersey.
They defeated the Devils 6-0 on Saturday, with six different players scoring and Ilya Sorokin stopping all 37 shots he faced. Rookie Victor Eklund also recorded his first NHL goal and added an assist.
Sorokin has now stopped 61 of 63 shots through his first two starts, giving him a .968 save percentage.
That makes the Islanders particularly interesting if he gets another start Tuesday.
The problem is that head coach Pete DeBoer has yet to officially announce his goalie. Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov were both at Monday's practice, and DeBoer declined to reveal who would face the Rangers.
Varlamov coming off the ice first at Monday's practice has created some expectation that he could make his first regular-season NHL start in nearly two years.
The Islanders had remarkable success in this matchup last season.
They went 4-0 against the Rangers and outscored them 14-3, including a 5-0 victory at Madison Square Garden in their first meeting.
That should not be treated as proof that the Islanders automatically have an advantage Tuesday. The Rangers changed several significant pieces of their roster during the offseason and have started this season much better.
But the recent history does help explain why I am reluctant to push the Rangers substantially above the current high-50¢ range.
The Islanders have already shown that they can make this rivalry uncomfortable by keeping the game structured and limiting New York's opportunities through the middle of the ice.
The Rangers' 3-1-0 record looks considerably stronger than the Islanders' 1-1-0 mark, but the early underlying numbers show less separation.
New York has produced an estimated 50.8% five-on-five expected-goal share, compared with 50.0% for the Islanders. The Islanders have generated approximately 3.13 expected goals per game compared with 2.60 for the Rangers, although the sample remains extremely small this early in the season.
Those numbers do not make the Islanders the stronger team. They do suggest that the Rangers' three-game winning streak should not automatically push their fair value dramatically higher.
At this stage of the season, roster strength, goaltending and home ice still deserve more weight than a few games of expected-goal data.
Shesterkin is confirmed for the Rangers. The Islanders' decision is much more important for the prediction market.
If this becomes Sorokin vs Shesterkin, I would put the Rangers around 56–57% fair value. At that point, a Rangers contract in the high-50¢ range offers very little room.
If Varlamov starts, I would move the Rangers closer to 59–60%.
Varlamov returned during the preseason after nearly two years away from NHL action following major knee procedures. He did play against the Rangers twice during the preseason, including a full game on September 25, but a regular-season return at Madison Square Garden would be a very different test.
That makes the Islanders' goalie announcement the most important remaining piece of information.
The Rangers deserve to be favored.
They have the better early record, home ice and a confirmed elite goalie who is already playing at a high level.
But most of those advantages are already incorporated into the market price.
The Islanders are also arriving after their strongest performance of the young season and have dominated this rivalry recently. If Sorokin starts, there is not enough separation between these teams for me to want a Rangers contract approaching 60¢.
If Varlamov starts, the equation changes.
My baseline projection gives the Rangers approximately a 57% chance of winning, although the final number depends heavily on the Islanders' starting goalie.
That makes the current market largely efficient rather than an obvious opportunity.
Recommended Position: Islanders Yes
Model Probability: 43%
Market Probability: Around 44%
Model Edge: Minimal at current price
Entry Threshold: 42¢
Model Confidence: Moderate
At 42¢ or lower, the Islanders become interesting, particularly if Sorokin is confirmed.
Around 44¢, I would rather wait.
For the Rangers, I would want an entry closer to the mid-50¢ range unless Varlamov is confirmed for the Islanders. If Varlamov starts and the Rangers remain available below 60¢, the Rangers side becomes considerably more attractive.
For now, the Rangers are the deserved favorite, but the current high-50¢ price leaves very little margin for error.
