Avalanche vs Jets Prediction Market Preview: Is Colorado Worth the Price?

The Colorado Avalanche have opened the season looking every bit like a Stanley Cup contender, and prediction markets have taken notice ahead of Wednesday's road matchup against the Winnipeg Jets.
Colorado is trading around the low-60¢ range on both Kalshi and Polymarket despite playing away from home. Winnipeg has collected five of a possible six points to begin the season, but the Jets' underlying numbers have been considerably less impressive than their record.
That makes Colorado the stronger side in my projection, although the current market price leaves only a modest margin for error.
Kalshi currently gives Colorado roughly a 63% market probability, with Winnipeg around 38%. Polymarket is virtually identical, with Colorado trading around 63¢ and Winnipeg around 38¢.
There is essentially no meaningful price difference between the two platforms.
The question instead is whether Colorado's strong start warrants a market probability comfortably above 60% on the road.
The Avalanche have opened 2-0-0 while scoring 14 goals.
Colorado followed an 8-4 opening-night win against Los Angeles with an even more convincing 6-1 victory over St. Louis. Nathan MacKinnon already has five points, Artturi Lehkonen has three goals and Martin Necas has four points through two games.
Those offensive numbers will obviously come back toward normal levels, but Colorado's underlying play has also been excellent.
The Avalanche have generated approximately 3.65 expected goals per game while allowing just 2.26. Their early 5-on-5 expected-goal share sits around 64%, one of the strongest marks in the league.
That is the biggest reason I am comfortable keeping Colorado above the current market price in my projection.
This has not simply been a team shooting at an unsustainable percentage while getting outplayed.
Winnipeg enters 2-0-1 after consecutive road wins over Detroit and Pittsburgh.
The Jets deserve credit for tightening things defensively. They allowed only four combined goals in those two victories and held Pittsburgh to two goals Monday despite the Penguins entering with one of the league's hottest offenses. Winnipeg has specifically emphasized limiting quality opportunities as part of its identity this season.
The underlying numbers are less convincing.
Winnipeg has produced approximately 3.18 expected goals per game while conceding 3.58, with an early 5-on-5 expected-goal share below 40%.
Three games is far too small a sample to treat those figures as definitive, but the contrast with Colorado is difficult to ignore.
Colorado has controlled the majority of its quality opportunities. Winnipeg has largely been on the other side of that equation despite getting results.

The biggest structural difference between this Winnipeg team and the one that has been so difficult to play against in recent seasons is in goal.
Connor Hellebuyck remains unavailable after failing to report to training camp and being suspended by the Jets amid his trade request.
Winnipeg has instead opened the season with Stuart Skinner and Clay Stevenson.
Skinner has started two games and owns a .909 save percentage, while Stevenson stopped 29 of 31 shots against Pittsburgh on Monday.
The Jets have handled the situation reasonably well so far, but replacing a three-time Vezina Trophy winner inevitably changes Winnipeg's baseline.
Against an offense featuring MacKinnon, Necas, Lehkonen, Cale Makar and a deep supporting group, that difference becomes particularly important.
The expected goalie matchup is Scott Wedgewood against Stuart Skinner, but neither starter had been officially confirmed at the time of publication.
Daily Faceoff currently lists Wedgewood and Skinner as the projected starters.
Colorado's situation is worth monitoring closely because Mackenzie Blackwood has started both games so far, stopping 52 of 57 shots.
The Avalanche also play Calgary on Thursday, making this the first half of a back-to-back. That creates a logical opportunity for Colorado to split the two starts between Blackwood and Wedgewood.
If Blackwood gets Wednesday's start instead, I would move Colorado slightly higher in my projection. If Wedgewood starts as expected, the current market is closer to fair.
Colorado's top line is understandably getting most of the attention, but the early scoring has been spread throughout the lineup.
Thirteen Avalanche players recorded at least one point through the first two games, while Nicolas Roy, Brock Nelson, Parker Kelly and Gabriel Landeskog have all contributed offensively.
The Avalanche are also producing a league-leading five goals per game at 5-on-5 through their opening two games.
Logan O'Connor and Zachary L'Heureux have yet to play because of lower-body injuries, so Colorado has actually produced this start without its full complement of forwards.
Winnipeg's challenge will be preventing Colorado from turning sustained possession into repeated chances through multiple lines rather than simply trying to contain MacKinnon.
Winnipeg's home-ice advantage and encouraging defensive results keep this from becoming an automatic Colorado position.
But the overall matchup still favors the Avalanche.
Colorado has been significantly better territorially, owns the deeper offensive lineup and does not have to face Connor Hellebuyck. Winnipeg's early record is strong, but its expected-goal numbers suggest the Jets have not controlled games at the same level.
Colorado around 63¢ is close enough to my fair price that I would not force an entry before the goalie situation is settled.
A move toward 61–62¢ would create a more attractive Colorado position. Conversely, Winnipeg would need to move closer to 40¢ before I would seriously consider the home side.
Recommended Position: Colorado at 62¢ or lower.
The Avalanche have been the better team both in the results and underneath them. The only issue is price: prediction markets already recognize how strong Colorado has looked, leaving considerably less value than the matchup itself might initially suggest.
