Formula 1 heads from Zandvoort to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, September 6. Mercedes still holds the championship advantage, but McLaren has closed the performance gap in recent races, and Lando Norris arrives in Italy after consecutive victories in Hungary and the Netherlands. That run has pushed Norris to the top of the prediction markets for Monza. There is still plenty of competition from George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, but the combination of recent form, qualifying speed and a major penalty for championship leader Kimi Antonelli creates an appealing case for Norris at his current price.
Norris arrives at Monza as the driver in the strongest form. The defending champion won in Hungary before the summer break and followed it with another victory at Zandvoort, where he started from pole and eventually beat Antonelli by more than 11 seconds.
The Dutch Grand Prix was especially useful for evaluating McLaren because Norris had to win the race rather than simply inherit it. Antonelli moved ahead following the restart and led much of the middle portion of the Grand Prix, but Norris closed the gap, recovered the lead and pulled clear. That performance followed a weekend in which the McLaren was also quick over one lap, giving Norris pole ahead of Russell and Antonelli.
McLaren's improvement matters at Monza because the Italian circuit puts a very different load on a car than Zandvoort. Low drag, efficiency, and power deployment are critical. Norris has shown enough straight-line performance in the updated McLaren to justify placing him ahead of the rest of the field, though the advantage is hardly large enough to make him a runaway favorite.
Russell is the most serious alternative. He finished third in the Netherlands and sits second in the championship with 183 points, level with Hamilton and 59 behind Antonelli. Russell's 29¢ Polymarket price is reasonable given Mercedes' overall performance this season and the importance of power-unit performance at Monza. He should be a major threat if Mercedes gets its low-drag setup right.
The complication for Mercedes is Antonelli. The championship leader has accumulated 242 points and finished second at Zandvoort, but Mercedes has confirmed he will take a full new power unit in Italy and start from the back of the grid. Monza is one of the better circuits for recovering positions because overtaking is possible, yet asking Antonelli to move through nearly the entire field and beat Norris, Russell, Hamilton and Leclerc is a much more difficult assignment than he is used to.
The 34¢ price for Norris implies a 34% chance of victory. My estimate is 39%. That is enough separation to make Norris our preferred prediction, although the position becomes less attractive above 36¢ because much of the value disappears.
The Italian Grand Prix is held at Autodromo Nazionale Monza, one of Formula 1's oldest and fastest circuits. The track measures 5.793 kilometers, with Sunday's Grand Prix scheduled for 53 laps and a total race distance of 306.72 kilometers.
Monza's character is built around long periods at full throttle separated by heavy braking zones. Cars spend roughly 80% of the lap at full throttle and reach maximum speed on the 1.1-kilometer start-finish straight. That puts a premium on aerodynamic efficiency and power-unit performance while forcing teams to run some of their lowest-downforce configurations of the season.
The first chicane is one of the key areas for both racing and strategy. Drivers arrive at very high speed before braking sharply, creating one of the best passing opportunities on the circuit. The same combination of speed, slipstreaming and heavy braking can produce opening-lap incidents, so starting near the front carries extra value.
Qualifying should therefore be especially important for Norris and Russell. A front-row starting position gives a driver the chance to dictate the first stint without spending laps fighting through traffic, while Antonelli's penalty places him in exactly the opposite situation.
The early forecast also points to hot, mostly dry conditions. Temperatures around Monza could reach roughly 33 to 34 degrees Celsius with a limited chance of rain. Tire wear is traditionally relatively modest at this circuit, so a conventional one-stop strategy remains a strong possibility if the race stays dry.
That setup should place more emphasis on raw pace, track position and pit-stop timing than extreme tire management. McLaren has demonstrated that it can qualify at the front and maintain competitive race pace, and Norris has converted that speed into two straight victories. At 34¢, there is still enough room between the market price and my 39% win estimate to make him the strongest Italian Grand Prix prediction before practice begins.
