Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy meet in the five-round lightweight co-main event at UFC 331 on Saturday, September 19, at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Tsarukyan enters as the No. 2-ranked lightweight, while Ruffy is listed at No. 10. The contrast is sharp: Tsarukyan brings elite chain wrestling, control and efficient defense, while Ruffy carries a 75-inch reach, a high-output striking game, and major finishing power. The question is which of those styles will win out on Saturday night.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Ruffy’s strong takedown-defense percentage can make this matchup look safer for a longer fight than it really is. Tsarukyan can create repeated wrestling exchanges rather than relying on one clean entry, while Ruffy’s knockout threat creates another route to an early finish.”
The Under Has Value
At the latest available Polymarket snapshot, the main winner market prices Tsarukyan at 75¢ and Ruffy at 26¢, making the favorite side fairly expensive. The Under 3.5 Rounds market is priced at 62¢, which offers a more balanced entry point. Polymarket defines Under 3.5 as the fight ending before the 2:30 mark of Round 4. My projection puts that outcome at 67%, producing a 5% model edge. I would consider it playable through 65¢, where the projected advantage would still be 2%.
Recent Fights Point to the Under
The case for an early finish starts with the way Ruffy’s recent fights have ended. He stopped Michael Chandler at 4:29 of Round 1 in June, stopped Rafael Fiziev at 4:30 of Round 2 in January, and was submitted by Benoît Saint Denis at 2:56 of Round 2 in September 2025. Tsarukyan’s latest UFC appearance also ended early, with an arm-triangle submission of Dan Hooker at 3:34 of Round 2. Ruffy is dangerous enough to punish a poor entry, but Tsarukyan is more likely to force extended grappling sequences, tire Ruffy’s defensive reactions and create finishing opportunities before the later rounds.

Fighter | Age | Height | Reach | Stance | Record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Arman Tsarukyan | 29 | 5'7" | 72.5" | Orthodox | 23-3 |
Mauricio Ruffy | 30 | 5'11" | 75" | Orthodox | 14-2 |
Tsarukyan has won 5 straight MMA fights in the UFC, with victories over Dan Hooker, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Joaquim Silva and Damir Ismagulov. His most recent UFC appearance came against Hooker in November 2025, and Tsarukyan controlled much of the fight before securing an arm-triangle choke in Round 2. His current UFC numbers remain excellent for this matchup: 3.85 significant strikes landed per minute, only 1.80 absorbed per minute, 3.26 takedowns landed per 15 minutes, and 75% takedown defense.
Ruffy arrives with a 14-2 record and consecutive stoppage victories over Fiziev and Chandler after his submission loss to Saint Denis. The Chandler performance was particularly fast, with Ruffy repeatedly hurting the former title contender before forcing the stoppage late in Round 1. Ruffy has 13 knockout victories and just 1 decision win. Ruffy lands 4.19 significant strikes per minute, absorbs 3.83, owns 87% takedown defense, and averages 1.54 knockdowns per 15 minutes.
Tsarukyan’s best work comes from pressure, level changes, and chained takedown attempts, which is important to note when making UFC predictions in this market. He does not need every first entry to succeed because his strength is extending an exchange until his opponent gives him another opening. Once he establishes top position, he can switch between control, ground strikes, and submission attacks. His defensive striking numbers are also important against Ruffy. Allowing only 1.80 significant strikes per minute gives Tsarukyan a much better statistical defensive profile than most of Ruffy’s recent opponents.
Ruffy is the more dangerous pure striker. He is 4 inches taller, owns a 3-inch reach advantage and is comfortable operating from distance before suddenly closing the gap with power. His timing and shot selection give him a real chance to catch Tsarukyan during a level change. Ruffy’s 87% takedown defense looks impressive on paper, but his 2025 loss to Saint Denis showed the limitation of reading that statistic by itself. Saint Denis completed 3 takedowns, accumulated 4:38 of control time and finished Ruffy with a rear-naked choke in Round 2.
The first few minutes should give Ruffy his best opportunities. Tsarukyan has to cross distance against a longer fighter with genuine knockout power, so careless entries could turn into clean counters. Ruffy has recorded knockouts in 13 of his 14 professional victories, and his wins over Green, Fiziev and Chandler showed that he does not need many clean connections to change a fight.
Tsarukyan’s cleaner path is to force Ruffy to defend several threats at once. He can attack doubles in open space, move into body locks, work trips against the fence, and disguise his entries behind strikes. Even if Ruffy stuffs the initial attempts, repeated wrestling exchanges should make it harder for him to maintain the long-range striking rhythm that makes him so dangerous.
If Tsarukyan consistently gets Ruffy to the fence, the matchup changes quickly. Ruffy has less room to set his feet and fire counters, while defending multiple takedowns requires more energy than simply circling at range. That is where Tsarukyan can start accumulating control and searching for an arm-triangle, back take, or a ground stoppage.
The key to the Under 3.5 Rounds prediction is that both fighters’ best paths support it. Ruffy’s clearest route is an early or middle-round knockout before Tsarukyan establishes sustained grappling. Tsarukyan’s path is to make Ruffy repeatedly wrestle, turn those defensive exchanges into fatigue, and find a submission or ground finish. Ruffy’s last 3 UFC fights all ended by the conclusion of Round 2, while Tsarukyan is coming off a Round 2 submission himself.
My projected fight result is Tsarukyan by submission in Round 3, but Under 3.5 Rounds at 62¢ is my preferred prediction because it also covers Ruffy’s most dangerous route to victory: landing a fight-ending strike before Tsarukyan can take full control.
