The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies open a huge four-game series on Friday, September 4, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park. Two of the hottest teams in baseball meet with plenty at stake in the NL East, as Atlanta enters the series holding a four-game lead over Philadelphia.
Friday's opener also gives us a great pitching matchup, with Chris Sale (13-9, 2.06 ERA) facing Cristopher Sánchez (16-4, 2.52 ERA). In this preview, I'll share my Braves vs Phillies prediction and break down some of the biggest storylines surrounding Friday night's matchup.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“I think the current price is underestimating just how strong this starting pitching matchup is. Sánchez has been dominant at home, and even if Sale takes a small step back after an emotional win over the Dodgers last week, I still trust both starters enough to keep runs at a premium.”
Our model gives Under 6.5 a 56% probability
Under 6.5 is currently priced at around 47¢ on Polymarket, while our model puts the probability closer to 56%. That creates a 9% model edge at the current price and gives us some room before the position becomes too expensive. I’d be comfortable backing the Under up to around 52¢.
Sale and Sánchez set up for a low-scoring opener
The starting pitching matchup is the biggest reason I like the Under. Chris Sale enters with a 2.06 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 177 strikeouts, while Cristopher Sánchez is 16-4 with a 2.52 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 202 strikeouts. Sánchez has been especially dominant at Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies haven't lost one of his starts since May 22. Sale is coming off a complete-game shutout against the Dodgers, and even if he takes a small step back after throwing a season-high 109 pitches, I still trust both starters enough to keep this game relatively low scoring. Our model projects a 3-2 Phillies win, putting the expected total at just five runs and making Under 6.5 my favorite position in Friday night's opener.

Cristopher Sánchez finished second in the NL Cy Young voting in 2025, and he’s followed that up with another impressive season for the Phillies.
Similar to last year, Sánchez has been at his best at Citizens Bank Park. He’s posted a 1.68 ERA and 1.10 WHIP at home, compared to a 3.68 ERA and 1.32 WHIP on the road. That home dominance is a big part of why we like the Under in our Braves vs Phillies prediction for tonight.
The Phillies are also 14-2 in Sánchez’s home starts this season and haven’t lost one since May 22. Interestingly, one of those two losses came against Atlanta earlier this year, when Sánchez allowed three unearned runs across six innings while striking out eight in a 3-1 Braves win.
Still, Sánchez has been about as reliable as it gets at home this season, and he’ll look to keep that going Friday against the NL East leaders.
Friday night’s matchup features two of the hottest teams in baseball. The Phillies have won 15 of their last 18 games dating back to August 13, a stretch that includes sweeps of the Twins, Marlins, Cardinals, and Angels.
The Braves have quietly gone on a run of their own, winning eight of their last 10. That stretch includes a three-game sweep of the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers.
Pitching has been a big part of the recent success for both teams. Philadelphia and Atlanta finished second and fourth in MLB in team ERA during August at 3.06 and 3.11, respectively. With Sale and Sánchez on the mound Friday, that recent run prevention could carry right into the series opener.
The Braves (83-57) enter Friday with a four-game lead over the Phillies (79-61) in the NL East, with 32 games remaining for both teams.
That gap could look quite a bit different over the next week or two. Friday marks the start of a four-game series in Philadelphia, and the two division rivals will meet again for another three-game series in Atlanta beginning next Friday night. That means seven of their next 10 games will come against each other.
There’s plenty on the line beyond just the division lead. Atlanta and Philadelphia are also battling for playoff positioning, home-field advantage, and potentially a first-round bye in the National League.
With seven head-to-head games packed into such a short stretch, the Braves have a chance to create some real separation in the NL East. The Phillies, meanwhile, have an opportunity to erase much of that four-game deficit themselves.
