New Mexico State vs FIU Prediction & Preview: Can the Aggies Pull Off the Upset?

The New Mexico State Aggies head to Miami on Wednesday night for a Conference USA matchup with the Florida International Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Pitbull Stadium.
New Mexico State enters at 2-3 after cruising past Western Kentucky 34-13 last Thursday, while Florida International is now 2-2 after a comfortable 20-3 win over LIU on September 26.
For our New Mexico State vs FIU prediction, I’m taking the Panthers -6.5. Below, I’ll break down the matchup and why I think FIU can cover the number.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“I’m backing FIU to win by a touchdown or more on Wednesday night. New Mexico State’s 34-13 win over Western Kentucky looked better on the scoreboard than it did on the field, as the Aggies were actually outgained 361-352. This is a major step up in class against arguably the best defense they’ve faced all year, and I like FIU’s matchup through the air against an NMSU defense allowing 242.6 passing yards per game.”
Polymarket Pricing
FIU -6.5 is currently trading at 51¢ on Polymarket, while our model gives the Panthers a 56.9% chance of covering. That gives us a 5.9% edge at the current price, with the model projecting a 27-20 FIU win.
FIU’s Defense Should Give NMSU Problems
FIU is allowing just 245.8 total yards per game, which ranks ninth in the country, along with only 14.5 points per game. The Panthers are especially strong against the run, giving up just 80.8 rushing yards per game and 2.5 yards per carry. That’s a major problem for an NMSU offense averaging 150 rushing yards per game and relying heavily on star running back James Jones.
The Spot Sets Up Well for FIU
FIU is coming off a bye while New Mexico State played last Thursday and now has to travel from Las Cruces to Miami for a Wednesday night game. The Panthers are also 2-0 at home, while NMSU is 0-2 on the road. With FIU rested and playing at home, I think the Panthers are in a good spot to create some separation.

Fifth-year running back James Jones has been the centerpiece of the New Mexico State offense, and he is coming off a career-high 155 rushing yards against Western Kentucky. He faces a much tougher test against FIU, which is allowing just 80.8 rushing yards per game and 2.52 yards per carry, ranking among the best in the country in both categories.
New Mexico State averages 150 rushing yards per game and has topped 100 in four of five games. If FIU can slow down Jones and force the Aggies to win through the air, I like the Panthers’ chances of keeping NMSU’s offense in check.
Redshirt junior quarterback JJ Kohl has thrown for 1,065 yards and five touchdowns through four games, but he has also thrown six interceptions. Those six picks are the most among Conference USA quarterbacks, making ball security one of the bigger concerns for FIU on Wednesday night.
Forcing turnovers has been a consistent strength for New Mexico State under head coach Tony Sanchez. The Aggies have forced at least one turnover in 20 of their last 21 games, so this isn’t exactly a new trend for this defense.
NMSU has also scored three defensive touchdowns this season, tied for the most in the country. That includes De’Marcus Peters’ pick-six against Western Kentucky last week, so Kohl will need to avoid giving the Aggies the kind of easy points that could keep this game close.
This game could come down to the battle in the trenches. New Mexico State is coming off a six-sack performance against Western Kentucky, its most in a game since recording seven against FIU in 2023. The Aggies now have 12 sacks through five games and rank third in Conference USA with 2.4 per game.
Senior defensive end Gabe Peterson leads NMSU with 2.5 sacks, while sophomore defensive end Brad Vislisel has recorded a sack in each of the last two games. That gives New Mexico State a pass rush that appears to be improving as the season goes on.
FIU has protected JJ Kohl well, though, allowing just three sacks through four games, tied for 13th in the country. That could be especially important against an NMSU defense allowing 242.6 passing yards per game, which ranks 112th in the FBS.
This should be a fun matchup to watch as Conference USA gets the first Wednesday night college football slate of the season underway. I’m expecting a lower-scoring game, which also lines up with our New Mexico State vs FIU matchup model.
Ultimately, I think FIU has enough advantages to win and cover the number. The Panthers have the better defense, a favorable matchup through the air and a clear third-down advantage. FIU’s defense is allowing opponents to convert just 31.8% of their third downs, while New Mexico State ranks 128th in the country with a 34.4% early-down success rate.
Turnovers are probably the biggest concern given JJ Kohl’s six interceptions through four games and New Mexico State’s ability to create defensive points. As long as Kohl takes care of the football, though, I think FIU controls this game and wins by at least a touchdown.
