The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs close out their four-game series at Wrigley Field on Thursday night in a matchup between the top two teams in the NL Central. Milwaukee enters at 87-53 with the best record in baseball after taking consecutive games from Chicago, while the Cubs are 78-62 and fighting to strengthen their postseason position. Logan Henderson is scheduled to start for Milwaukee opposite veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman for Chicago.
Our Brewers vs Cubs prediction for Thursday is for the Brewers to finish the series with another victory. Milwaukee has been the more consistent team throughout the season and has responded impressively after getting crushed 17-3 in Monday's series opener. The Brewers bounced back with 9-4 and 9-5 victories, showing why they have created significant separation from Chicago in the NL Central.
This is essentially a toss-up according to the Polymarket prediction market. As of Thursday morning, Milwaukee was priced at 51 cents, representing roughly a 51% implied probability of winning, while Chicago was priced at 50 cents. With such little separating the teams in the market, Milwaukee's advantages in starting pitching and bullpen performance make the Brewers the preferred side for me.
Milwaukee already entered September in an excellent position to win the division, but taking three of four at Wrigley Field would provide another statement about where these teams stand.
The Brewers have won the last two games despite facing very different circumstances. They erased an early deficit Tuesday before pulling away for a 9-4 victory, then survived one of Jacob Misiorowski's worst starts of the season Wednesday and still won 9-5. Milwaukee's bullpen was especially important Wednesday, delivering five scoreless innings after Misiorowski exited.
Gausman enters Thursday at 8-11 with a 4.52 ERA over 28 starts. His advanced metrics are considerably better than that ERA, including 156 strikeouts over 155.1 innings, but consistency has been an issue.
His most recent outing demonstrated that problem. Gausman allowed five runs over five innings against Cincinnati on Saturday, although Chicago's offense provided more than enough run support in a 17-5 win. The Brewers counter with Henderson, who brings an impressive 9-2 record and 2.48 ERA into the matchup, putting significant pressure on Gausman to deliver in this spot.
Anyone expecting a low-scoring divisional series has been disappointed this week. The first three games have produced 47 combined runs, with Chicago winning the opener 17-3 before Milwaukee answered with nine runs in each of the next two games.
Jackson Chourio has been particularly dangerous for the Brew Crew. He collected four hits Wednesday, including his 21st home run, and continues to provide Milwaukee with a difference-maker near the top of the lineup. Alex Bregman has been one of Chicago's hottest hitters and drove in four runs Wednesday. He will need to produce to give the Cubs a chance of evening this series.
The biggest matchup to watch in this contest is Milwaukee's lineup against Gausman. The Cubs need their starter to limit traffic on the bases and work deep enough into the game to avoid exposing a bullpen that struggled badly on Tuesday.
Chicago's challenge will be solving Henderson while keeping the game close enough for its offense to make a difference. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Bregman provide significant power threats for the Cubs, but Milwaukee has shown throughout this series that its lineup can create pressure from multiple spots in the order. If Henderson delivers another quality start, the Brewers should leave Chicago with a 3-1 series victory.
