The Houston Astros and San Diego Padres meet Sunday night at Petco Park with both clubs sitting above .500 and firmly in the postseason race. San Diego enters at 61-57 after taking Saturday’s game 3-2, while Houston is 60-58 and is looking to flip the script in this rubber match. The Padres have home-field advantage, but the pitching matchup creates an interesting opportunity on the Houston side. Cristian Javier is scheduled to start for the Astros after returning to the rotation, while Randy Vasquez gets the ball for San Diego.

Houston Astros vs San Diego Padres Model Projection
- Score Projection: Houston Astros 4 – San Diego Padres 3
- Win Probability: Houston Astros 54%, San Diego Padres 46%
Our model gives Houston a modest edge despite the Astros being listed as underdogs. The primary reason is the gap between the current market price and Houston’s offensive ceiling. Yordan Alvarez is hitting .325 with 35 home runs, 86 RBI and a 1.069 OPS this season. He remains one of the most productive hitters in baseball and gives Houston a major advantage whenever the lineup can create traffic ahead of him. Jeremy Pena has also been productive, while the Astros entered the series among MLB’s leading teams in home runs, runs scored, slugging percentage and OPS.
San Diego has plenty of offensive talent of its own, with Fernando Tatis Jr. hitting .281 and Manny Machado providing another experienced middle-of-the-order bat. Jackson Merrill has been especially important in this series after hitting a go-ahead home run Saturday and driving in 2 runs. Still, San Diego’s offense has been inconsistent for stretches, and Petco Park has produced just 7.8 runs per game this season.
The biggest concern for the Astros is Javier. His overall 2026 numbers remain poor, with a 6.59 ERA and limited workload since returning from injury. However, his most recent start against Toronto lasted 6 innings and represented his longest outing of the season.
Vasquez has been steadier for San Diego and owns a 7-6 record with a 4.19 ERA. He also threw 6 scoreless innings against Arizona earlier this week, allowing only 2 hits. That recent performance makes San Diego deserving of being favorites, but Houston’s lineup presents a much tougher test. The Astros also have an attractive price at plus money, while the projected low-scoring environment reduces the likelihood that the Padres can separate from Houston early.

Pitching Matchup
Javier’s season numbers require caution, but his recent workload is encouraging. He has been working his way back after a shoulder issue and Tommy John surgery, and his 6-inning outing against Toronto was a meaningful step forward. He allowed 3 runs in that start, giving Houston some evidence that he can provide length rather than forcing the bullpen into an early workload.
Vasquez has produced the cleaner statistical resume this season. He is listed at 7-6 with a 4.19 ERA for Sunday’s game and recently completed 6 scoreless innings against Arizona. He has also been useful at preventing San Diego from having to rely heavily on its relief corps. His recent form is one of the strongest arguments for the Padres, but Houston’s left-handed power threat in Alvarez could make this a much more difficult assignment.
Astros vs Padres Same Game Parlay
- Astros ML (+111)
- Under 8.5 (-105)
- Yordan Alvarez 1+ Home Run (+234)
Total Parlay Odds: +1200
I think we are in for a lower-scoring game than many would expect here. While both starting pitchers have been inconsistent in 2026 in what action they have had, both of these lineups have also been inconsistent in 2026. Alvarez is one of the exceptions to that rule, so we will combine his home run prop with the Astros moneyline and the under for a parlay that will pay out at +1200 if all three legs hit.
Betting Trends & H2H
- The season series between these teams is tied 1-1.
- This is the final meeting of the season between Houston and San Diego.
- Houston is 30-29 on the road this year.
- San Diego is 33-26 at home in 2026.
The betting value ultimately sits with Houston rather than San Diego. The Padres have earned their favorite status with better recent pitching and home-field advantage, but the Astros are receiving plus money despite possessing the more dangerous offensive centerpiece and a bullpen that should be in reasonable shape. The projected score of 4-3 also fits the recent history between these clubs and the run environment at Petco Park.
The Under 8.5 is another reasonable consideration, particularly given the recent history and the ballpark’s scoring environment, but Houston’s moneyline offers the stronger combination of price and projected value. If Javier can keep San Diego within reach through the middle innings, the Astros have enough offensive quality to take advantage of the later innings. Our model therefore gives Houston a 54% chance of winning and recommends the Astros moneyline at plus money.
