COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UNLV has opened 1-0 with a top-100 KenPom ranking and a positive net rating, supported by a solid offensive rating and a defense that is notably better than Samford’s on a possession basis. The Rebels are also stronger in the key box-score areas that usually travel well in college basketball: field-goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebounds, and points allowed per game. Samford also started 1-0, but its profile is built off a very small sample and its defensive metrics lag behind UNLV’s. The Bulldogs do own strong shooting percentages in the opener, especially at the foul line, but they will need that efficiency to hold up against a deeper and more physical UNLV team. If UNLV limits second-chance chances and keeps Samford out of an easy rhythm from deep, the home side should control the game from early in the second half onward.
UNLV is the clear side with the better overall statistical profile and the stronger home-court setup. The Rebels project to win by a comfortable margin behind superior efficiency, better rebounding, and a more reliable defensive floor, with a final score projection of 84-75. That puts the home team in position to justify the moneyline value while keeping the game in a range where UNLV’s size and defensive edge should matter late.
