COLLEGE BASKETBALL

St. John's enters with the superior early-season statistical base. The Red Storm have averaged 78.0 points per game, shot 41.9% from the field, and have been especially strong on the glass at 40.0 rebounds per game. Their defensive numbers are also cleaner, allowing 63.0 points per game while posting a KenPom defensive rating of 92.4 and offensive rating of 114.4. Iona has had a tougher start offensively. The Gaels are at 56.0 points per game, 38.6% shooting, and 41.7% at the foul line, which is a major concern against a high-level Big East defense. Their rebounding is solid at 34.0 per game, but the gap in shot-making and scoring efficiency is wide enough to keep them from forcing the game into a higher total. St. John's is the clear better team and should control the matchup on both ends.
St. John's should dictate the game from the opening stretch, using its stronger defense, better shooting, and clear rebounding edge to separate from Iona. The Gaels have not shown enough offensive efficiency to keep pace, and the matchup points to a comfortable home win with the score landing well below the market total. Final projection: St. John's Red Storm 79, Iona Gaels 58.
