The Connecticut Sun continue their road trip out west looking to stop another skid when they face the Portland Fire on Wednesday night. Connecticut enters the game with a 1-7 record and has struggled on both ends of the floor through the opening weeks of the WNBA season. Portland, meanwhile, has quickly become one of the league’s surprise clubs. The expansion Fire have already collected several quality wins and are coming off an impressive road victory over the New York Liberty. Here, I break down this inter-conference matchup in the W and make my Sun vs Fire prediction in the betting markets.

Key Storylines
Portland enters this game after one of its best performances of the season. The Fire erased a double-digit deficit against New York and dominated the fourth quarter in an 81-74 win. Carla Leite controlled the offense late, Emily Engstler anchored the defense, and Portland’s depth wore down the Liberty on the second game of a back-to-back for New York. That win improved Portland to 4-3 on the season and pushed the club above .500.
Connecticut is moving in the opposite direction. The Sun has lost 7 of their first 8 games and are allowing more than 90 points per game. Defensive rotations have been inconsistent, and the offense has struggled to keep pace against athletic opponents. Connecticut was blown out 97-70 by Golden State in its most recent outing, marking the team’s second loss in a row.
The Sun are still receiving strong effort from younger contributors, but injuries and roster instability have limited their continuity. Portland appears much more comfortable offensively and has shown far better late-game execution. The Fire also hold a recent head-to-head win over Connecticut, giving them another edge entering this contest.
Key Players
Portland Fire
- Carla Leite has become the engine of Portland’s offense. She is averaging more than 15 points per game and continues to create scoring chances for teammates. Leite scored 18 points against New York and has emerged as Portland’s most reliable perimeter threat.
- Emily Engstler has changed games defensively for the Fire. Her activity around the basket and ability to defend multiple positions have been major reasons for Portland’s strong recent stretch. She posted four steals and four blocks in the win over the Liberty.
- Bridget Carleton gives Portland another experienced scoring option. Her shooting and spacing help open the floor for Leite and Portland’s attacking guards.
Connecticut Sun
- Aaliyah Edwards has been one of Connecticut’s brightest spots despite the poor start. She continues to provide scoring near the basket while also helping on the glass. Edwards recently contributed 12 points and four rebounds in Connecticut’s first victory of the season.
- Kennedy Burke remains an important perimeter scorer for the Sun. She delivered the winning basket against Seattle earlier this month and has taken on added offensive responsibility.
- Charlisse Leger-Walker has shown promise as a rookie contributor. She scored 16 points off the bench in Connecticut’s victory over Seattle and has provided needed energy for the second unit.
Head-to-Head & Betting Trends
- Portland defeated Connecticut 83-82 earlier this season.
- Connecticut is 1-7 straight up this season.
- Portland has won 4 of its last 5 games.
Sun vs Fire Model Projection
- Score Projection: Connecticut Sun 80 – Portland Fire 91
- Win Probability: Connecticut Sun 31%, Portland Fire 69%
Portland enters this game in much stronger form and has looked far more comfortable offensively through the opening month of the season. The Fire are pushing the pace, moving the ball efficiently, and getting production from multiple players. Connecticut continues to have defensive breakdowns, and the Sun have struggled to contain teams with strong guard play.
The Fire should also benefit from home court after building confidence with recent victories over quality opponents. Connecticut’s effort level has remained solid, but the roster still appears thin against deeper teams. Unless the Sun suddenly improves defensively, Portland should have plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the night. I’ll lay the points with the Fire at home against arguably the worst team in the WNBA.
