Key Storylines
Carlos Alcaraz needed over five hours to dispatch Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. The Spaniard dealt with some intense cramping that required a controversial medical timeout, with Alcaraz regrouping in time to take the final set 7-5. The question will be how Alcaraz’s both holds up in this match, both from a cramping standpoint and from the standpoint of having to come back and play after over five hours on court in his last appearance.
On the other side, Novak Djokovic weathered the storm against defending champion Jannik Sinner. The GOAT came back from a set down twice before getting the crucial break in the fifth set, which he took 6-4. Djokovic is just one win away from a 25th major title, an unprecedented achievement in modern tennis. But he will have to overcome the world number one in order to get there, on a quick turnaround after over four hours on court against Sinner.
Keys to the Match
The number one key to this match is going to be the physical health of Alcaraz and Djokovic. The tournament has done a great job of protecting its top stars by altering the conditions in their favor when needed, though the ethics of doing so have been shoddy at times. But there is no hiding in this match, as the winner will have to overcome their opponent and the conditions to claim the title down under.
On Alcaraz’s side, the key to this match will be forcing Djokovic to defend on a consistent basis. Djokovic is the greatest defender of all-time and is great at turning his defense into offense. But the age factor in this match would suggest that Djokovic can be worn down by the much younger Alcaraz if Carlitos can keep him moving for five sets.
The first serve will be the biggest key for Djokovic. Djokovic was like Harry Houdini in his break point escapes against Sinner, with effective first serving being a huge reason for his ability to prevent Sinner from converting on so many break chances in the fourth and fifth sets of the semifinals. The Djoker has to hit his spots on his first serve to avoid being put in peril time and time again by Alcaraz.

Final Thoughts
Novak Djokovic is going to empty the tank to try and win major number 25. But I think the physical reality of this match will bend things in the direction of Alcaraz. I’ll take the Spaniard to complete his career Grand Slam and to take this Australian Open final in four sets.
