Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe meet in an all-American semifinal at the Cincinnati Masters on Saturday, August 22, with both players arriving after impressive quarterfinal victories. Nakashima has arguably been the hottest player on the North American hard-court swing, while Tiafoe has produced his best tennis of the tournament at exactly the right time.
This is a fascinating semifinal because Nakashima has spent the last few weeks turning himself into one of the most difficult players to beat on hard courts. He reached the Washington semifinals, then advanced to his first Masters 1000 final in Montreal, and has now followed that run by reaching the Cincinnati semifinals. His quarterfinal victory over Taylor Fritz was particularly impressive. Nakashima defeated the No. 6 seed 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3 after Fritz had broken first in the deciding set. Nakashima answered by winning 4 straight games to close out the match.
The Fritz victory was Nakashima's ninth win in his last 10 matches and his sixth career victory over a Top-10 opponent. Four of those Top-10 wins have come during 2026, illustrating how much his level has risen during this stretch. He also entered Cincinnati with a 10-2 record on hard courts during the current North American swing after reaching the Montreal final.
His run in Cincinnati has included a win over Daniil Medvedev as well. Nakashima saved 3 match points in the second-set tiebreak before winning 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-1. That victory was his first against Medvedev in 4 attempts and demonstrated the American's ability to stay composed when a match starts moving against him.
Tiafoe, however, has his own case in this match. The 28-year-old entered Cincinnati as the No. 17 seed and has moved through the draw with wins over Lorenzo Sonego, Learner Tien and Felix Auger-Aliassime. His 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 2 seed Auger-Aliassime was especially convincing. Tiafoe committed only 16 unforced errors compared with 37 from Auger-Aliassime, won 71% of his first-serve points and 61% behind his second serve, and converted 3 of 5 break-point chances. He won 69 total points to 57.
Tiafoe's Cincinnati form has also been remarkably efficient. He has dropped just 1 set through his first 3 matches and has won 54% of the total points he has played at the tournament. Across the 2026 season, he is 35-15 overall and 18-8 on hard courts.
Tiafoe has dominated the career series against Nakashima, including a 3-set victory over him in the Acapulco semifinals earlier this year. Historical records have Tiafoe well ahead in the matchup, and the February meeting was another example of his ability to create problems for Nakashima with his serve and aggressive first-ball tennis.
The key betting question is therefore whether Nakashima's current form is enough to overcome Tiafoe's matchup advantages. Our model gives Tiafoe a narrow 52.5% chance of winning, which is far from a strong favorite but enough to create value if the market is around even money.
This match should be competitive, with both players capable of producing stretches of dominant serving. A 3-set battle is the most likely path in our model, but my recommended wager remains Tiafoe's moneyline rather than adding unnecessary exposure elseswhere, as Tiafoe offers the slightly better value side.
