Arthur Fils and Frances Tiafoe will meet Sunday in the Cincinnati Open final with both players chasing the biggest title of their careers. Fils enters as the market favorite after putting together a dominant run through the draw, while Tiafoe has also beaten a series of quality opponents to reach his second Cincinnati final. Here, we break down this Masters 1000 final and make our prediction before first ball in Ohio.
Fils is playing in his first Masters 1000 final, while Tiafoe is back in the Cincinnati championship match after previously reaching the final in 2024. Neither player has won a Masters 1000 title, guaranteeing a first-time champion.
Fils has arguably been the more convincing player during the tournament. The 21st seed has defeated Yannick Hanfmann, Jiri Lehecka, Alex de Minaur, Thiago Agustin Tirante and Flavio Cobolli on his way to the final. His biggest statement came against de Minaur, when he won 6-3, 6-4, then followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tirante and a 6-3, 6-4 win over Cobolli.
The Frenchman has been excellent on hard courts this season. He entered the final with a 19-5 record on the surface in 2026, while his overall record stood at 31-10. That hard-court success is important against Tiafoe because the American has also been highly effective on this surface, going 20-8 in 2026.
Tiafoe has taken a slightly longer route to the final. He defeated Lorenzo Sonego, Learner Tien, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Lorenzo Musetti and Brandon Nakashima. The quality of that run should not be overlooked. Tiafoe beat the 4th-seeded Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4 and then eliminated Musetti 7-6(2), 7-5 before beating Nakashima 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Tiafoe's semifinal numbers show why he is capable of making this a difficult match for Fils. He produced 30 winners and 7 aces against Nakashima, saved 7 break points and converted 5 of 10 break opportunities. His first-serve percentage was only 52%, but he won 77% of those first-serve points. His second-serve numbers were less impressive, at 44%, which could become important against Fils' aggressive return game.
Across the tournament, Fils has been slightly more efficient. He has played 104 games compared with 114 for Tiafoe and has won 354 points compared with 388 for the American, but Fils has produced 152 winners against 146 for Tiafoe. More importantly, Fils has landed 62% of his first serves compared with 50% for Tiafoe and has won 62% of his second-serve points compared with 53% for the American.
The head-to-head also favors Fils. The players have met once, with Fils winning a marathon 7-6(11), 5-7, 6-2 match in the 3rd round at Miami in 2025. That match lasted 2 hours, 55 minutes, so there is already evidence that Fils can handle Tiafoe's athleticism and shot-making on an outdoor hard court.
Overall, Fils has shown fewer weaknesses during this run. His second serve has been particularly effective, he has generated more winners relative to his total points played, and he has already demonstrated that he can beat elite hard-court opposition in Cincinnati. We will lay the 2.5 games with Fils, in what should be an interesting test of nerves for both players.
