The men’s short track speed skating 500m at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina is always exciting, with speed and chaos both playing major roles. The 500m distance is known for razor-thin margins, explosive starts, falls, and frequent upsets. Who will navigate all of those things to win gold for their country? Here, I make my prediction for this race in the betting markets.
Below is a snapshot of the latest pre-race betting odds for the men’s 500m short track speed skating event at the 2026 Winter Olympics, with odds subject to change:
The central storyline entering the 500m revolves around Canadian dominance during the 2025-26 campaign. Dandjinou has led the World Tour 500m standings with multiple podium finishes, showcasing explosive acceleration off the start and efficient cornering that allows him to defend the inside line. His race management has improved over the past two seasons, turning him from a pure speed threat into a well-rounded contender capable of handling Olympic pressure.
Steven Dubois is the reigning world champion at this distance and adds another name to Canada’s medal hopes. Dubois combines elite speed with tactical awareness, often positioning himself perfectly entering the final lap. In short track, that final corner is decisive, and Dubois has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to execute clean passes when the stakes are highest.
Jens Ven’t Wout of the Netherlands has been a steady presence on the podium throughout the World Tour circuit. His strength lies in mid-race positioning and controlled aggression, attributes that matter in tight heat races. Italian skater Pietro Sighel will benefit from competing on home ice, and while that does not change the physical variables of the race, it can influence his energy levels and confidence positively.
China’s Xiaojun Lin and Long Sun enter with strong straight-line speed that matches anyone in the field. If they secure favorable lane draws and avoid contact in the opening turns, either could convert raw pace into a medal. South Korea’s Jongun Rim remains a dangerous starter who can seize control early if he reacts sharply to the gun.
The 500m distance itself remains the ultimate equalizer. With race times typically hovering in the low-40-second range, there is minimal room for recovery. A slight slip, bump, or mistimed pass attempt can eliminate even the favorite. That inherent unpredictability is what keeps betting markets wide and why outright favorites rarely dominate at extremely short prices. There is always the potential for contact, falls, and the potential for officials to decide who advances in some situations.
Backing William Dandjinou at +200 is my choice for this race, thanks to a blend of statistical factors and reasonable price value. His season-long consistency at 500m separates him from many sprint specialists who alternate podiums with early exits. Leading the World Tour standings signals that he is both in form and able to perform across different venues and ice conditions.
