The men’s 5000m relay in short track speed skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano‑Cortina is set for Monday at the Forum di Milano. Skating’s fastest nations will battle not just for medals, but for pride as the world’s top squads look to outmaneuver each other in this high‑pressure team event. With eight countries left in medal contention, continue reading to get my short track speed skating men's 5000m relay prediction below.
One of the defining storylines heading into this relay is Canada’s role as the defending champion. At the previous Olympic Games, Canada captured gold in a commanding performance, showcasing depth, discipline, and excellent exchanges. That pedigree is reflected in the betting markets, where Canada sits ahead of the pack with the shortest price, suggesting confidence from bookmakers that they will again be a major contender.
The United States are not a part of the semifinals of this event, as they are not inside of the eight countries still with a chance to win gold. Instead, China and South Korea are two of the teams with the best chances of upsetting the Canadians going into championship Monday in this exciting Olympic event.
Italy, as the host nation, has been riding high from success in other short track events and will be fueled by home support. Although priced at +800, the Italians could become a factor if they skate aggressively and capitalize on this event's chaotic race dynamics. With the sport’s inherent unpredictability, Italy’s familiarity with the Forum di Milano ice surface could be an advantage on the night.
The Netherlands, more traditionally associated with long track speed skating, are getting attention at +700. They’ve put forth some strong relay performances throughout the season and could sneak away with a medal if they put together a clean race. Outside that group, most nations are viewed as longshots, with little public betting share or proven relay success in recent seasons.
It is important to remember that chaos and short-track speed skating often go hand in hand. The potential for contact between skaters and falls often leave results in the hands of race officials to determine who was in the wrong in those situations. That always has the potential to uplift teams or derail them, even the race favorites.
Pick: Canada ATS PRO
Confidence: 4 out of 5
Canada stands out as the most consistent and proven relay team heading into the semifinal and final, and the betting markets reflect that. Their history as defending Olympic champions, combined with strong World Cup performances in the 2025‑26 season, suggests they have both speed and cohesion necessary to navigate the multifaceted dynamics of a 5000m relay. In relay races, the margin for error is small. Clean skating, precise exchanges, and strategic pacing are essential. Canada’s athletes have shown an ability to deliver under pressure and adjust tactics mid‑race, making them a reliable selection for bettors seeking value. And without the US to upend them, I'll go with Team Canada to grab gold in this event once again.
