The United States closes out Group D play on Thursday night when it faces Turkey at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood. While the standings are already settled, there is still plenty to evaluate. The Americans have already secured first place in the group after victories over Paraguay and Australia, while Turkey has been eliminated after back-to-back defeats. That creates an unusual matchup, as Mauricio Pochettino is expected to rotate several key players ahead of the knockout stage. Turkey, meanwhile, enters with pride on the line and an opportunity to avoid leaving the tournament without a point or goal.
The biggest factor in this matchup is motivation. The United States has already locked up first place in Group D and is expected to rest several regular starters. Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams, and Folarin Balogun are all expected to sit due to yellow-card concerns, while Christian Pulisic's workload remains uncertain after a calf issue.
Turkey has little to lose and should field a stronger lineup featuring Arda Guler, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Kenan Yildiz. The concern for Turkey is that the attack has failed to score through two group matches while generating limited quality chances. The Americans have conceded just one goal through two games and continue to look organized defensively, regardless of personnel.
Even with a rotated squad, the United States has more depth and arrives with confidence after a 4-1 win over Paraguay and a 2-0 victory against Australia. Turkey's inability to create goals consistently makes it difficult to back them outright. A low-scoring match feels like the most likely outcome, with the Americans doing enough to earn a victory.
Parlay Odds: +300
The first leg backs the deeper squad. The United States has won both group matches and has conceded only once during the tournament. Even with rotation in mind, their overall talent advantage remains significant.
The second and third legs focus on the expected game script. Turkey has not scored in the competition and enters after losses to Australia and Paraguay. The Americans are likely to prioritize staying healthy and maintaining defensive structure rather than pushing numbers forward. That points toward a low-scoring match with limited opportunities.
The United States has enjoyed a nearly perfect group stage. A 4-1 victory over Paraguay showcased the attacking quality of Balogun and the American frontline, while the 2-0 result against Australia demonstrated the team's defensive discipline. Through two matches, the United States has scored six goals and conceded only one.
Pochettino's challenge now is balancing form with player management. Several starters are carrying yellow cards, and avoiding suspensions ahead of the knockout rounds is the priority. That means opportunities for squad players who have seen limited action so far in the tournament.
Turkey's tournament has gone in the opposite direction. Losses to Australia and Paraguay eliminated Vincenzo Montella's side before the final group match. More concerning is the lack of attacking production. Turkey has failed to score in either match despite boasting several talented players competing at top European clubs.
Arda Guler remains the player most capable of changing the game with a moment of quality. Kenan Yildiz provides pace and creativity in wide areas, while Calhanoglu's set-piece ability can always create danger. Still, Turkey has struggled to turn possession into clear scoring chances throughout the tournament.
From a betting perspective, motivation creates some uncertainty. Turkey's strongest edge is likely effort level, as this is its final match of the competition. The United States has bigger goals ahead and may naturally be more cautious. However, the gap in squad depth and recent form still favors the hosts.
Expect Turkey to compete hard and create a few dangerous moments, but the United States should have enough quality to finish the group stage unbeaten. A tight contest with limited chances appears likely, making a 1-0 American victory the most probable result.
