Paraguay and Australia meet in a decisive Group D clash on Thursday night at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium with a place in the World Cup knockout stage hanging in the balance. Both nations enter the final group match on three points, but the paths they took to get here have been very different. Paraguay recovered from a 4-1 loss to the United States by defeating Türkiye 1-0, while Australia opened with a 2-0 win over Türkiye before falling 2-0 to the United States. Australia holds the edge in goal difference and can likely advance with a draw, while Paraguay enters with a simple objective: win and move on.
The numbers suggest a tightly contested match with very little separating the teams. Paraguay has greater urgency because a draw likely leaves them in third place, but that same urgency could create opportunities for Australia on the counterattack.
Australia's defensive structure has been impressive throughout the tournament. The Socceroos conceded only twice against the group-winning United States and kept a clean sheet against Türkiye. Paraguay looked much sharper in its victory over Türkiye but still carries concerns after allowing four goals against the Americans. With Miguel Almiron suspended, Paraguay also loses one of its most experienced attacking players.
A draw appears to be the most likely result, but Australia enters as a slightly safer bet because of its defensive discipline and ability to play the game state. For betting purposes, Australia Draw No Bet offers protection if the match finishes level.
Total Parlay Odds: -125
This match has all the ingredients of a low-scoring World Cup group-stage finale. Australia knows a draw may be enough to advance and has shown a willingness to defend in numbers. Paraguay must chase the result, but it has scored only twice through two group matches and now plays without a suspended attacking leader.
The Australia +0.5 leg aligns with the tournament form shown by Tony Popovic's side. The Socceroos have been difficult to break down and remain capable of frustrating opponents for long stretches. Combining that with a low-scoring script creates a parlay built around the most likely match flow.
Few matches on the final day of the group stage carry stakes as clear as this one. The United States has already secured first place in Group D, leaving Paraguay and Australia battling for second place. Australia enters second in the standings thanks to a superior goal difference, while Paraguay sits third and requires all three points to avoid having to sweat out the ranking of third-place teams.
Paraguay's tournament began disastrously with a 4-1 defeat against the United States. However, Gustavo Alfaro's side responded exactly as needed by grinding out a 1-0 victory over Türkiye. That result kept qualification hopes alive and showcased the defensive organization that helped Paraguay reach the World Cup.
The challenge for Paraguay is balancing aggression with caution. A draw accomplishes less than a win, meaning the South Americans will eventually need to commit numbers forward. That approach could leave space for Australian attackers to exploit during transitions.
Australia has followed a more predictable path. The Socceroos opened with a 2-0 win over Türkiye before losing 2-0 to the United States. While the defeat was disappointing, there was no embarrassment in the performance. Australia remained organized and competitive against one of the stronger teams in the tournament.
Tony Popovic's preferred setup emphasizes defensive shape, physical play, and disciplined positioning. It may not produce spectacular attacking numbers, but it has given Australia a chance in nearly every major tournament match over the past several years.
Ultimately, Australia's path to advancement is simpler and its defensive foundation appears more trustworthy. Paraguay may enjoy more possession and create pressure late in the match, but breaking down a compact Australian defense is easier said than done.
Expect a tense affair with limited scoring opportunities. Paraguay should push hard for the breakthrough it needs, but Australia's organization and tactical discipline make the Socceroos difficult to beat. A 1-1 draw is the most likely outcome, with Australia doing enough to continue its World Cup journey.
