Round of 32 | July 1, 2026 | Lumen Field, Seattle, WA | 4 PM ET
Belgium and Senegal meet in Seattle in what is, on paper at least, one of the more balanced Round of 32 ties. The Red Devils finally clicked into gear against New Zealand, but the tournament experience of Senegal cannot be underestimated, and their considerable threat on the counter is enough to put us off the Belgium moneyline.
Pick: Belgium to Advance -178
Confidence: 3 out of 5
The temptation is to take Belgium at plus money in 90 minutes. They are the better side on paper, they have the calmer defensive profile, and Senegal are without their first-choice goalkeeper. But this is a knockout match against a fast, physical opponent with enough attacking quality and tournament know-how to make the 90-minute market uncomfortable.
Belgium to advance is the best way to attack this game. It still backs the favorite, but it protects against the most obvious danger: a 1-1 or 0-0 match that drifts into extra time. Belgium have not been free-flowing throughout the tournament. They labored in draws with Egypt and Iran before finally breaking loose in the 5-1 win over New Zealand. That late group-stage performance showed their ceiling, but it does not fully erase concerns about chance creation against stronger defensive units.
Romelu Lukaku is the key uncertainty. If he starts, Belgium have a proven central finisher and a more natural target for Kevin De Bruyne, Jérémy Doku and Leandro Trossard. If he is used from the bench, Charles De Ketelaere gives Belgium more mobility but less penalty-box threat. Against a Senegal side that simply couldn't handle another physical forward in Erling Haaland, Garcia's choice of forward could be a decisive factor.
Senegal’s case is built on pace and directness. Ismaïla Sarr has been their standout attacker, with 3 goals and 1 assist in the group stage, while Sadio Mané and Nicolas Jackson give them runners who can punish Belgium if Garcia’s side overcommit. Senegal scored 8 goals from 6.02 xG across the group stage, more than Belgium (6 goals from 7.78 xG) managed, and their 5-0 win over Iraq showed what they can do when the match opens up.
The problem is the other side of the ball. Senegal conceded 6 goals in their first two matches, and individual errors were costly against France and Norway. Losing Mendy makes that more concerning. Mory Diaw is capable, but a backup goalkeeper in a knockout game changes the stress level on set pieces, crosses, long-range shots and penalties, giving a clear edge to Belgium.
Belgium are not an automatic 90-minute winner, but they have more routes to survival. They can win a tight match through De Bruyne’s delivery, isolating Doku against Diatta, a set piece, or a late Lukaku impact. If the match reaches extra time or penalties, Courtois gives Belgium another major advantage. That is why Belgium to advance is the preferred play.
The winner of this contest will face the winner of the USA vs Bosnia match on Wednesday night. Whichever side progresses here will be hoping for a Bosnia win to avoid playing the USA at home in one of the nation's loudest stadiums.
The biggest risk to Belgium is Senegal’s speed. Doku and De Bruyne can push Belgium forward, but if turnovers open the pitch, Sarr and Mané are dangerous enough to punish them. Belgium need control first and attacking ambition second.
Clean build: Belgium or Draw + Under 3.5 Goals + Kevin De Bruyne 1+ key pass. This protects against extra time, keeps the match inside a realistic total, and leans on Belgium’s main creative outlet.
Belgium build: Belgium to win + Under 3.5 Goals + Jérémy Doku 1+ shot on target. This is the controlled 1-0 or 2-1 Belgium script, with Doku providing the wide threat against Senegal’s back line.
BTTS build: Belgium to win + Both Teams to Score + Ismaïla Sarr 1+ shot on target. This is the higher-scoring 2-1 route, built around Senegal producing one dangerous transition spell before Belgium’s quality and goalkeeper edge decide it.
Belgium projected XI (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Castagne, Mechele, Theate, De Cuyper; Onana, Tielemans; Doku, De Bruyne, Trossard; De Ketelaere
Senegal projected XI (4-3-3): Diaw; Diatta, Seck, Niakhaté, Jakobs; Camara, Gueye, Diarra; Mané, Jackson, Sarr
Lineups are projected and subject to late changes. Belgium have a stronger bench if Lukaku is used as an impact substitute, while Senegal are without Mendy and are expected to continue with Diaw in goal.
Score Projection: Belgium 2 - Senegal 1
Win Probability: Belgium 46%, Senegal 25%, Draw 29%
Belgium have the better goalkeeper, the stronger defensive base and the more experienced late-game options. Senegal have the pace and attacking form to make this dangerous, especially through Sarr, but the Mendy absence is a major disadvantage in a knockout match.
The pick is Belgium to Advance at -178. Belgium +115 in regulation is the more aggressive version, but the advancement market better reflects the matchup. This could be tight for long spells, but Belgium have enough control, creativity and penalty-box quality to survive and move on.
Who is favored in Belgium vs Senegal?
Belgium are slight favorites in the 90-minute market and stronger favorites to advance. The market has them around +115 to win in regulation and -178 to qualify.
What is the best bet for Belgium vs Senegal?
The best bet is Belgium to Advance. The 90-minute moneyline is playable, but the advancement market protects against a draw after regulation.
Why not take Belgium ML?
Belgium ML at plus money is reasonable, but Senegal’s pace and attacking output make extra time realistic. Belgium to advance is safer while still backing the better overall side.
Is BTTS a good bet?
Yes, BTTS is live because Senegal have scored in every tournament match and Belgium should create chances against Senegal’s backup goalkeeper.
What is the predicted score?
The projected score is Belgium 2 - Senegal 1 after 90 minutes.
