Cristiano Ronaldo had two choices this week. He could sit on a bench in Copenhagen, back his teammates, and wait for his moment. Or he could leave. He left.
The 41-year-old walked out of Portugal's camp on Wednesday, only hours after Jorge Jesus told the press he wouldn't start the Nations League game against Denmark. A grown man, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, the captain of his country, packed his bags because he was told he'd be a substitute.
This is what Ronaldo has always been underneath the six-pack and the celebrations. A brilliant footballer, yes, but also a spoiled 41-year-old who's never once accepted that a team might function better without him at the center of it. With Portugal performing better without a preening superstar wasting possession with long shots and refusing to press up front, the time has finally come for Ronaldo to bow out from the international scene.
The tantrum timeline
This story has unravelled quickly. Ronaldo started the 1-0 win over Wales and got substituted in the 67th minute. Then he sat through the entire 2-1 win in Norway without getting off the bench, and Jesus then had the temerity to say he'd be on the bench again in Copenhagen. This was all it took for a man who has often spoken of the pride he feels to represent his country to depart the squad and return to Al Nassr after refusing to attend three straight training sessions.
Then came the Instagram statement, promising he'd one day tell the Portuguese people "the truth", and wishing his teammates good luck for the remaining games from the comfort of his private jet. Ronaldo the brand, as well as Ronaldo the man, can never lose face.
The truth is already out there. He was dropped and he couldn't handle it, and this isn't the first time CR7's tantrums have drawn attention from the achievements of his teammates.
In fact, we've seen this tantrum before. Four years ago in Qatar, Fernando Santos benched him after he threw his toys out of the pram when substituted in the previous match against South Korea. Goncalo Ramos came in for him in the Round of 16 and scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win.
Old Trafford, October 2022. He refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham and stormed down the tunnel before full-time. Weeks later he went on Piers Morgan to trash the club, and Manchester United showed him the door. Every time a manager has the nerve to treat him like the squad player he should be in the twilight of his glittering career, Ronaldo throws the same fit.
Portugal are better without him
Here's what'll really hurt. With Ronaldo on a plane home, Portugal went to Copenhagen and played their best football in years. Joao Cancelo and Ramos scored in the first half, Vitinha headed in his first ever international goal on his 46th cap, and Joao Felix finished it off for a 4-2 win. With four different scorers and Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings, it finally felt like the cohesie unit that Portugal have been one player away from for at least 4 years. The ball zipped around the pitch as Portugal's midfielders were allowed to control the game, instead of force-feeding a 41-year-old waiting for his tap-in.
Portugal are now six points clear at the top of their Nations League group, and surely favorites to progress to the semi finals and have the chance to defend the title they won in 2025. Jesus summed it up perfectly afterwards, saying no player would ever change his ideas as coach. Finally Portugal have a manager with the courage to stop tiptoeing around a celebrity, and do what's best for the team.
