Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 Prediction: Verstappen Emerges After Strong Friday at Sepang

Max Verstappen has emerged as the most interesting early race-winner angle after the opening day of the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The Red Bull driver topped FP1 at Sepang before finishing fourth in FP2 despite never switching to the soft tyre.
Charles Leclerc produced the fastest outright lap of Friday with a 1:37.528, while Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris completed the FP2 top three. However, Verstappen's medium-tyre performance and strong long-run pace make his session more significant than the headline classification suggests.
This is still an early-weekend prediction. FP3 and qualifying remain to come, and the market could move substantially before Sunday's race.

Bahrain GP Expert Verdict

“Friday has pushed Verstappen from 15% to 27% on Kalshi, but the move is supported by more than his FP1 headline time. He remained within 0.257 seconds of Leclerc in FP2 without using the soft tyre and produced the quickest long-run average of the leading cars.”
Verstappen Has Been Repriced, But Friday Supports It
Verstappen has jumped from 15% pre-practice to 27% on Kalshi. He topped FP1, ran fourth in FP2 without using soft tyres and produced the strongest available long-run pace. The market has reacted aggressively, but there is evidence behind the move.
Antonelli Still Carries a Mercedes Premium
Antonelli remains favorite at 37¢ despite finishing only eighth in FP2. His deleted soft-tyre lap makes that result misleading, but Friday's action did not justify paying significantly more for him than Verstappen.
Russell at 21¢ Is the Other Mercedes Option
Russell sits at 21¢ after finishing P2 in FP1 and P7 in FP2. Mercedes' soft-tyre runs were compromised, so the market has not abandoned the Baku winner, but Friday's long-run data currently favors Verstappen.

Biggest Risk:
Mercedes find the right setup for Antonelli & RussellVerstappen’s Friday pace was stronger than the FP2 classification suggests. He finished fourth without using the soft tyre, yet remained within 0.257 seconds of Leclerc’s benchmark. More importantly, his long-run average was the quickest of the leading contenders, giving Red Bull the strongest early race-pace profile.
That pace is a key factor in me selecting this pick. Mercedes still have more performance to find, but at 27¢ Verstappen is cheaper than Antonelli while currently showing the better sustained pace. Russell and Leclerc have both said that they see Red Bull as the team to beat this weekend.
The biggest risks to this trade cashing are Mercedes finding the right setup for their drivers, and Red Bull carrying that long-run advantage into qualifying and race day.
If Red Bull can put Verstappen on the front row, their race pace and the 4-time World Champion's ascendant form could well be enough to see him on the top step of the podium on Sunday evening.
