Man City vs Brighton Prediction: Tactics, Lineups & Market Value

Updated October 28, 2026

Enzo Maresca has already confirmed Geronimo Rulli starts in goal tonight, and he won't be the only change. Haaland, Dias, Gvardiol and Donnarumma were given three days off after Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Villa Park, City's first league loss of the season, and these two clubs meet again at the Etihad on Saturday.
Brighton don't have that dilemma.
Fabian Hurzeler has called this tie "do-or-die," and his side arrive with the most dangerous attack in the Premier League by expected goals, even after Sunday's 2-0 loss at Anfield.
Polymarket has City as a 54¢ favorite in regulation time. I see a +5% edge on backing Brighton +1.5 at 69¢.
City's back line has been leaking
Seven straight league wins to open the season hid a defensive trend that's now hard to ignore. City have conceded nine goals in their last four matches across all competitions, four of them in Paris and two in a 3-2 win over Ipswich. Tonight a patched-up back line takes on one of the Premier League's leading attacks.
Brighton have City's number
Since the start of 2024-25, Brighton are the only top-flight club City haven't beaten. January's meeting at the Etihad ended level, with Kaoru Mitoma cancelling out Haaland. Mitoma misses out tonight, but Brighton's threat comes from the whole front line pressing together. They were 2-0 down at Old Trafford in the last round and still won 3-2.

WHY I'M BACKING BRIGHTON +1.5

“Maresca is protecting his best players for Saturday. Hurzeler isn't. I'll take the team whose manager is treating this as a final, with a cushion that still pays if City nick it by a goal.”
Brighton's underlying numbers are the best in the league. Through five Premier League games they led the division with 11.49 xG, posted the lowest PPDA at 7.4 and forced the most high turnovers with 56. The four league wins that followed came with 15 goals scored and none conceded, and Hurzeler felt his side had the better of the statistics at Anfield despite the 2-0 scoreline.
City's results have run ahead of their process. Opta's expected points had them roughly 5.8 points better off than their chances deserved after five matches, and the chances they allow are the highest quality of any Premier League side. A full-strength City can paper over that. A rotated one has less margin.
At player level, Pascal Gross has 3 goals and 3 assists from 1.74 xG and 2.33 xA, and Charalampos Kostoulas has scored twice from 1.77 xG. City's attack without Haaland runs through Phil Foden, who's averaging 0.64 xG and 0.53 xA per 90 in the league and scored a hat-trick in the 5-1 win over AEK Athens.
Fitted to the moneyline, our goals model starts with City around 1.9 expected goals and Brighton around 1.2. Adjusting for City's rotation and Brighton's likely strong selection moves those to about 1.7 and 1.3, which drops City's chance of winning by two or more to about 26%.
Brighton xG, first five Premier League games: 11.49 (league high)
Brighton PPDA: 7.4 (lowest in the league)
Brighton's last four league wins: 15 scored, 0 conceded
City goals conceded, last four matches: 9
Pascal Gross: 3 goals, 3 assists, 2.33 xA in five league games
Phil Foden: hat-trick vs AEK Athens, 0.64 xG per 90 in the league
Maresca's likely shape is a 4-2-3-1 with Foden as a false nine, Jeremy Doku and Iliman Ndiaye wide, and Nico O'Reilly in the No. 10 role. Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson should form the pivot if Anderson plays after his rest days, with Mateo Kovacic the alternative.
The problem for City is playing out from the back. Brighton press higher and harder than anyone in the league, and Rulli, Khusanov and a reshuffled back four will be under pressure from the first whistle. Maresca saw it himself: "They are very brave, aggressive and when they have the ball they attack with so many players."
City's best route goes down their left. Ferdi Kadioglu is a doubt after going off early at Anfield, so Costinha is likely to start at right-back after a hard afternoon against Cody Gakpo. Doku against Costinha is the matchup to watch.
Brighton will build through Gross from deep, with Diego Gomez and Maxim De Cuyper stretching City's full-backs and Kostoulas attacking the space between Khusanov and Dias.
