Liverpool vs Chelsea Prediction: Tactics, Lineups & Market Value

Look at Liverpool's last two Champions League nights and you'd expect fireworks. They won 6-3 at LASK and 4-3 against Villarreal. Their Premier League games have been a different story, though, and tonight's lineup will look a lot more like a cup side than a European one.
Andoni Iraola is expected to rotate heavily, Giorgi Mamardashvili starts in goal, and Chelsea arrive without Cole Palmer or Joao Pedro, their two most productive attackers. Polymarket prices the total as if both teams will be at full strength.
We see a +5% edge on backing Under 3.5 goals at 60¢, with two rotated lineups cratering the expectation for goals.
Chelsea's attack loses its two main sources
Palmer is suspended after his red card against Tottenham, and Xabi Alonso says Joao Pedro will be out "for a few weeks." Between them they had five goals and five assists from 4.34 xG in Chelsea's first five league games. Without Pedro on Saturday, Alonso tried Morgan Rogers through the middle and Chelsea managed just 0.43 xG, their lowest in a league game this season. Danny Welbeck is expected to lead the line tonight.
Liverpool's domestic games tell a quieter story
Strip out the European chaos and Liverpool's matches are far tighter. Only two of their eight Premier League games have produced four or more goals, the 2-2 draws with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest back in August. Their last five league games finished 0-0, 1-0, 0-3, 2-1 and 2-0. A rotated XI built around Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas is unlikely to push that number up.

Why Under 3.5 Goals makes sense at Anfield

“Chelsea without Palmer and Pedro scored nothing against Spurs on Saturday. Liverpool are starting Nyoni, Koumas and Ngumoha. I don't see where four goals come from, so I'm happy taking the Under at 60¢.”
The total of 3.5 makes sense if you look at Chelsea's season as a whole. Their games have been wild: 3-2 at Fulham, 4-3 against Brighton, 5-1 against Bournemouth and 6-3 against Leeds in this competition. That's why fitting our goals model to Polymarket's moneyline and totals gives a combined expectation of about 3.2 goals.
The attackers behind those numbers aren't available tonight. Palmer had 2 goals and 2 assists from 1.82 xG in the first five league games, and Pedro had 3 goals and 3 assists from 2.52 xG. Rogers has 3 goals from 1.44 xG, but Alonso's experiment with him as the No. 9 didn't work. Against Spurs, Chelsea took seven shots worth 0.43 xG in total.
Liverpool's own attack will look very different too. Alexander Isak, 4 goals from 3.73 xG in the opening five league games, is expected to start on the bench, and Florian Wirtz is a doubt after twisting an ankle against Brighton. Dominik Szoboszlai is out. The likely front four of Barcola, Nyoni, Ngumoha and Koumas is a long way from Liverpool's first-choice attack.
Taking Palmer, Pedro and Liverpool's rotation into account, the ATS Quantitative Model lowers the expected total to just under 3.0 goals, split roughly 1.6 to 1.35 in Liverpool's favor. That keeps the moneyline close to where the market has it but pushes Under 3.5 up to 65%.
Chelsea xG vs Tottenham: 0.43 from 7 shots
Palmer and Joao Pedro, first five league games: 5 goals, 5 assists, 4.34 xG
Liverpool league games with 4+ goals: 2 of 8
Liverpool's last five league scorelines: 0-0, 1-0, 0-3, 2-1, 2-0
Chelsea set-piece goals conceded: 8, double any other Premier League side
Liverpool vs Chelsea: no Liverpool win in the last three meetings
Iraola should stick with a 4-2-3-1, with Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch in front of a back four of Ronald Araujo, Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet and Kostas Tsimikas. Nyoni plays between the lines, and Ngumoha, who had two assists against Villarreal, attacks from the left against his former club.
Alonso's 3-4-2-1 is more about control than chaos without Palmer. Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson give Chelsea a solid base, and Henderson will want to impose himself at the club where he made almost 500 appearances. Estevao and Rogers sit behind Welbeck, but with no Palmer to carry the ball into the box, Chelsea will rely on Pedro Neto and Jorrel Hato from the wing-back spots.
The obvious risk for the under is set pieces. Chelsea have conceded eight from dead balls, double any other side, and Mike Penders is coming off an own goal from a corner against Spurs. I'd expect Liverpool to test him on every delivery, and that's the most likely way this total breaks.
Expect a cagey first half. Two rotated sides tend to need time to find their rhythm, and Chelsea's best spell this season has often come after the break.
