Liverpool return to Anfield facing a difficult task against Galatasaray in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. The Turkish champions carry a 1-0 aggregate lead into the match after securing a narrow win in the first meeting. That early advantage has placed pressure on Liverpool, who must deliver a strong performance in front of their home crowd to reach the quarterfinals, especially after a series of underwhelming performances at Anfield in recent weeks.
The first leg in Istanbul produced a tight contest decided by a single goal. Galatasaray struck early through Mario Lemina, who converted from a corner in the 7th minute. Liverpool had opportunities to equalize, including an Ibrahima Konate goal that was ruled out after a video review. Despite creating several chances, the English side left Türkiye empty handed and now must overturn the deficit.
Liverpool have generally performed well in Europe this season. They finished the league phase with 6 wins in 8 matches and scored 20 goals while conceding only 8. Their attacking setup led by Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz has created consistent pressure in the final third, while the defensive partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate remains one of the strongest units in the competition. Both units have performed better in Europe than they have done domestically this season.
Recent form shows Liverpool have been productive in attack. Across their last 6 matches in all competitions they recorded 5 wins and scored multiple goals in several of those games. A 5-2 league win against West Ham and a 3-0 FA Cup victory against Brighton highlighted their ability to control matches at Anfield. A ponderous 1-1 draw at home to injury-ravaged Spurs, however, has left the Anfield crowd frustrated and expectant ahead of Wednesday's tie.
Liverpool enter the second leg with a few injury concerns. Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley, and Alexander Isak remain unavailable. Even without Isak, manager Arne Slot still has a deep attacking lineup that includes Salah, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike, and Ibrahima Konate should be refreshed after being rested for the Spurs game.
Galatasaray arrive with confidence after the first leg result and strong domestic performances. The Turkish side recently won a major league derby 1-0 against Besiktas and have recorded several impressive results in Europe. One of the most notable was a 5-2 victory against Juventus during the playoff round earlier in the competition.
The attack is led by Victor Osimhen, who played a key role in the first leg by assisting the decisive goal. The midfield pairing of Lucas Torreira and Mario Lemina provide drive and tenacity, while players like Baris Yilmaz and Noa Lang offer pace on the wings.
Galatasaray will have at least one defensive absence for the trip to England, with Davinson Sanchez unavailable due to suspension. That loss could weaken their back line against a Liverpool attack that tends to dominate possession at home.
Despite the advantage in the tie, Galatasaray may adopt a conservative approach. With the aggregate lead intact, the visitors can afford to defend deeper and rely on counter attacks through Osimhen and Yilmaz.
Sportsbooks have Liverpool listed as clear favorites for the second leg due to their strong home record and the need to attack. Current betting lines place Liverpool around -200 on the moneyline, while Galatasaray are priced near +500. The draw is commonly available near +350.
The total goals line is widely set at 2.5 goals with the Over slightly favored. That reflects Liverpool’s attacking style and the expectation that they will push aggressively from the opening minutes.
Liverpool are expected to control possession and create more scoring chances at Anfield. Their urgency to erase the deficit should produce sustained attacking pressure throughout the match. Galatasaray have proven they can compete with Liverpool, yet playing defensively for 90 minutes against a high tempo attack is difficult.
The absence of a key defender for Galatasaray could open space for Liverpool's forwards, especially on set pieces and wide attacking movements. At the same time, the Turkish side has enough attacking quality to threaten on counter attacks.
Score Projection: Liverpool 2 - Galatasaray 1
Pick: Liverpool -1
Confidence: 3 out of 5
Win Probability: Liverpool 61%, Galatasaray 39%
Liverpool should generate the majority of chances and eventually break through against a defensive Galatasaray setup. The visitors will likely produce a few dangerous counter attacks, but sustaining defensive focus for the full match will be difficult.
A narrow Liverpool victory appears likely, though the aggregate situation could still remain tight late in the game. Bettors looking for value may find the best angle on the home side covering a one goal spread in a match where Liverpool dictate the pace.
