Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction: Tactics, Lineups & Market Value

Manchester City may be arriving at Anfield under a cloud on Sunday, but five wins from five mean they head to Merseyside top of the league and with a perfect record. However, the points tally doesn't tell the whole story for City. City boast 15 points from 9.59 xPTS, leaving plenty of room for negative regression.
Liverpool are the opposite case. They’re unbeaten but have only nine points, and they quietly have the third-best defense in the league by expected goals against, at 1.22 xGA/90. The catch is that Andoni Iraola is without Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, and that changes the shape of this game.
Our model sees a +8% edge on Under 2.5 goals at 40¢.
Liverpool games have lacked goals
Only two of Liverpool’s five league games have gone over 2.5, and their last three finished 2-0, 0-0 and 1-0. That run was built on defense: three straight clean sheets, allowing an average of 0.75 xG. Now Andoni Iraola is without Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, his top scorer and top creator. Hugo Ekitike is out too, which leaves no natural No. 9. That makes a big home goal total hard to imagine.
City’s goals are concentrated in one game
City went over 2.5 in three of five, but their 5-3 win against Sunderland accounts for eight of the 18 goals in their games. Two of their last three were 1-0 wins. They’ve led for 52.5% of their minutes, more than anyone, and once in front they manage games rather than chase more goals. Phil Foden is suspended, which takes another creator out of the attack.
City Price on the Rise
The absence of Isak and Gakpo, combined with the expected return of Erling Haaland has seen City's price rise, but I would urge caution in jumping on the bandwagon. In light of the City being found guilty on 114 financial charges that that indirectly led to Liverpool missing out on several trophies, Anfield is sure to be a bear pit on Sunday, which could well level out the playing field.

Why I'm Backing the Under

“The market is pricing City’s reputation and the Sunderland game. I’m looking at a Liverpool defense allowing 1.22 xGA per game, an attack missing its two best players, and a City side that’s happy to win 1-0. Both teams will probably have to give up the ball and play on the counter, which isn’t how either of them usually plays. That points to a tight game decided by one moment, and at 40¢ the under is the best price on the board.”
The key gap is the 10.3-goal swing in xG differential. United are not just creating more, they are also suppressing chances far better.

City have won the last three meetings: 3-0, 2-1 at Anfield and 4-0 in the FA Cup.
Haaland has scored in each of his last two games against Liverpool.
Iraola wants Liverpool to press high and attack quickly when they win the ball back. Around 71% of their play goes down the flanks, which suits the gap Maresca leaves when one of his full-backs tucks inside to join the midfield.
City’s answer is press resistance. They have the best pass accuracy under pressure in the league, and Elliot Anderson is one of the hardest midfielders in the division to dispossess. This is critical against a Liverpool side with a league leading 7.43 PPDA. If City get through the press, Cherki will be looking for opportunities to find runners in behind the Liverpool high line
Liverpool’s problem is in attack. Without a recognized striker, I expect Bradley Barcola to lead the line, with Wirtz arriving from deeper. That gives them plenty of movement but no focal point. Liverpool have not played in this way under Iraola to date, and it will be interesting to see how they adapt to a more fluid attacking system.

think the market is pricing this as a high-scoring game between two attacking sides. The numbers suggest otherwise. Liverpool’s last three league games produced four goals combined, their defense is among the league’s best, and they’re missing Isak and Gakpo. City’s attack is efficient, but its biggest game was an outlier against Sunderland. Their wins at Old Trafford and against Coventry were both 1-0.
Both teams will probably have to accept less of the ball, and neither is set up to chase the game. One goal could decide it.
At 40¢, Under 2.5 is too cheap for a game I expect to be this tight.
Prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City
