Oilers vs Ducks Prediction Market Preview: Is Edmonton Undervalued?

The Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks are both unbeaten in regulation entering Wednesday's Pacific Division matchup, but prediction markets still give Edmonton a slight advantage on the road.
Edmonton is trading in the mid-50¢ range, with Anaheim sitting in the mid-40s. That looks broadly reasonable, although there is a small difference between platforms that could matter for anyone looking for an Oilers position.
The underlying numbers favor Edmonton considerably more than the early records suggest. Anaheim has started 2-0-0, but the Ducks have been outplayed territorially through two games, while the Oilers have generated one of the stronger expected-goal profiles in the league.
Kalshi had Edmonton around 54¢ on Wednesday morning, while Polymarket was closer to 56¢. Anaheim was available in roughly the mid-40¢ range.
Platform | Edmonton | Anaheim |
|---|---|---|
Kalshi | Around 54¢ | Around 44¢ |
Polymarket | Around 56¢ | Around 45¢ |
At approximately 54¢, Edmonton sits slightly below my projected probability. Once the Oilers move toward 56–57¢, most of that value disappears.
Edmonton enters 2-0-1 after collecting five of a possible six points through its first three games.
The Oilers lost their opener 6-5 in overtime to Vancouver before responding with a 9-7 win in the rematch and a much more controlled 3-1 victory over Seattle. Connor McDavid already has nine points, while Evan Bouchard has four goals and eight points.
The scoring numbers are obviously inflated by Edmonton's wild second game against Vancouver, but the underlying process has been encouraging.
Edmonton has generated approximately 3.52 expected goals per game while allowing 2.32. At 5-on-5, the Oilers own roughly a 56.5% expected-goal share through their opening three games.
That is important because Edmonton's raw defensive numbers look considerably worse. The Oilers have allowed 14 goals in three games, but much of that damage came during the two high-scoring games against Vancouver.
The 3-1 victory over Seattle was a much better representation of how Edmonton wants to play.
Anaheim has opened with impressive wins over Vegas and Florida.
The Ducks beat the Golden Knights 4-3 on the road before defeating the Panthers 3-2 in overtime in their home opener. That gives Anaheim wins against two strong opponents and should not be dismissed simply because of a small sample of underlying numbers.
Still, there is a significant difference between the results and the process.
Anaheim has generated approximately 2.41 expected goals per game while allowing 3.29. Its early 5-on-5 expected-goal share sits at only 43.1%.
Two games are nowhere near enough to draw firm conclusions, but Anaheim has relied heavily on timely finishing and goaltending.
Against Edmonton's top-end offensive talent, that becomes harder to sustain.

There is no uncertainty surrounding Edmonton's starting goalie.
Head coach Mike Babcock confirmed that Devon Levi will start against Anaheim, with Tristan Jarry scheduled to face San Jose later in the road trip.
Levi is 2-0-0, but his early numbers require context. He owns an .810 save percentage through two appearances after allowing seven goals during Edmonton's 9-7 win over Vancouver. He responded much better against Seattle, stopping 19 of 20 shots in the 3-1 victory.
Levi therefore remains one reason not to push Edmonton's fair probability too high.
Lukas Dostal is expected to start for Anaheim, although I would still treat his status as projected until the Ducks officially confirm it. Dostal has started both Anaheim games and owns a .918 save percentage and 2.42 goals-against average.
If Dostal starts as expected, Anaheim has the more trustworthy goaltending profile entering the matchup.
Edmonton's injury situation is another reason this market remains relatively close.
Zach Hyman is out, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is also unavailable with a lower-body injury. Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark are among several other Edmonton players currently sidelined.
Jason Dickinson has returned to practice and could be nearing his season debut, although Edmonton's official preview stopped short of confirming that he will play Wednesday.
The Oilers still have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl driving the offense, but their forward depth is clearly weaker than it would be at full strength.
Anaheim also has an important absence of its own. Troy Terry remains out following hip surgery, removing one of the Ducks' most established offensive threats. Defensemen Drew Helleson and Ian Moore are also unavailable.
This is also the first meeting between the teams since Anaheim eliminated Edmonton in six games during last season's first round.
Edmonton's own preview made clear that the series remains fresh in the Oilers' minds, with Vasily Podkolzin describing the rivalry as one in which the teams now "kind of hate each other."
That history does not materially change my probability, but it does remove any concern about Edmonton overlooking an early-season road matchup.
Anaheim has also proven it can match up effectively with the Oilers, which is another reason I would be reluctant to price Edmonton much above the upper-50% range.
Edmonton is the better team in my projection, but this is much closer than simply comparing McDavid and Draisaitl with Anaheim's lineup.
The Oilers have produced the stronger underlying numbers and have a substantial offensive ceiling. Anaheim counters with home ice, a likely goaltending advantage and a roster that already eliminated Edmonton from last season's playoffs.
Edmonton's injuries also reduce the gap.
My current projection is:
Team | Model Probability | Entry Threshold |
|---|---|---|
Edmonton Oilers | 56–57% | 54¢ or lower |
Anaheim Ducks | 43–44% | 41¢ or lower |
That creates an interesting platform-specific decision.
An Edmonton contract around 54¢ offers a small enough discount to consider a position. At 56¢ or higher, however, the Oilers are essentially trading at my fair value and I would rather wait.
Anaheim's current mid-40¢ price is also a little too expensive for my projection despite the Ducks' 2-0 start.
Recommended Position: Edmonton at 54¢ or lower.
The Oilers' stronger 5-on-5 process gives them the edge, but Devon Levi's start, Edmonton's injury list and Anaheim's likely advantage with Dostal prevent this from becoming a high-confidence position. The best opportunity is therefore Edmonton only when the contract can be found toward the lower end of the current market range.
