Buccaneers vs Cowboys Prediction & Preview: Will Tampa's Nightmare Season Reach 0-5?

Updated October 6, 2026

Tampa Bay heads to Arlington on Thursday night searching for its first victory of 2026, while Dallas has a chance to move above .500 before a difficult stretch of road games. The Cowboys enter at 2-2 after rallying past Houston 34-30, and the Buccaneers are 0-4 after a 17-14 loss to Green Bay. All 4 Tampa Bay defeats have come by 7 points or fewer, but an injured offense now has to keep pace with a Dallas attack that found another gear in Week 4.
Spread vs. Moneyline
Polymarket currently prices Dallas at 51¢ to cover -7.5, giving the prediction an implied probability of 51%. Dallas is also a clear favorite to win the game outright, but the spread market is much less certain that the Cowboys can turn their overall advantage into a victory of at least 8 points. That distinction creates a more attractive entry point than simply backing Dallas to win.
Expect Dallas to Create Separation
My projection gives Dallas a 56% probability of covering -7.5, producing a 5% edge over the current Polymarket price. Tampa Bay's defense keeps this from becoming an especially aggressive prediction, and the Buccaneers have yet to lose by more than 7 points this season. Still, Dallas has several ways to create separation. The Cowboys can attack through CeeDee Lamb, lean on Javonte Williams near the goal line, and force Daniels to produce enough through the air to keep Tampa Bay within range. A projected score around Dallas 27, Tampa Bay 17 supports the -7.5 prediction, with 53¢ representing my upper entry point.

Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Tampa Bay has remained competitive despite its 0-4 record, which helps explain why Dallas is priced at 51¢ to win by more than 7.5 points. The bigger issue for the Buccaneers is an offense averaging just 278.3 yards per game and now relying on rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels against a Dallas offense capable of creating separation with its passing attack.”
Baker Mayfield remains sidelined after injuring his right thumb, leaving Daniels in line for his second NFL start. The undrafted rookie completed 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions against Green Bay while adding 55 rushing yards. Tampa Bay generated only 275 total yards in that game, and protection remains a major concern after allowing 16 sacks through 4 weeks.
Daniels did show useful mobility and kept Tampa Bay within striking distance, but Dallas can make life difficult if it creates obvious passing situations. Tampa Bay has thrown 5 interceptions through 4 games and ranks 28th in total offense at 278.3 yards per game. The Buccaneers cannot afford repeated third-and-long situations if they want to keep Dallas from controlling the game and keep the favorite from being the winning side in NFL predictions for this contest.
Dallas enters Thursday after its best offensive half of the season. Prescott completed 20 of 25 passes for 248 yards after halftime against Houston and finished with 335 passing yards. Lamb caught 17 passes for 189 yards and the winning touchdown, giving him an NFL-high 37 receptions, 46 targets and 498 receiving yards through 4 games.
Tampa Bay's defense has been far better than its record suggests. The Buccaneers rank fourth in total defense, third against the run, and ninth against the pass. That unit will be missing Antoine Winfield Jr., however, after the Pro Bowl safety suffered a rib fracture that is expected to keep him out for 2 to 4 weeks. His absence is significant against a Dallas passing game built around Lamb and George Pickens.
Williams gives Dallas another way to apply pressure on Tampa's defense. He scored 3 rushing touchdowns against Houston and has already reached 7 rushing scores through the first 4 games. Tampa Bay's run defense has been one of its strongest units, so Dallas may have to remain patient rather than expecting Williams to dominate between the tackles.
Tampa Bay has stayed close every week, so Dallas cannot treat an 0-4 opponent as an easy assignment. The Buccaneers have lost their 4 games by a combined 20 points. Dallas has also allowed at least 20 points in every game and has yet to record an interception.
The difference is offensive reliability. Dallas has Prescott, the NFL's current receiving leader in Lamb, and a productive goal-line runner in Williams. Tampa Bay is asking a rookie quarterback to make his second start on a short week without Mayfield and with Winfield unavailable on defense. The Buccaneers' ability to keep all 4 losses within 7 points deserves respect, but the move from -8.5 to -7.5 is meaningful. Dallas now needs an 8-point victory rather than a margin approaching double digits. If the Cowboys protect the football and start faster than they did in Houston, their offensive advantages should be enough to clear that number.
