The Los Angeles Lakers visit the Cleveland Cavaliers in a prime-time matchup at Rocket Arena on Wednesday night. This matchup features the return of LeBron James to the franchise he has had two tenures with in his storied career, in what could be the final time he plays in Cleveland. There is also star power all over the rest of the floor in this marquee matchup. I'll break it all down for you here and bring you my Lakers vs Cavaliers prediction in the NBA.
Our Lakers vs Cavaliers Pick
Pick: Cavaliers -2.5 ATS PRO
Confidence: 3/5
Game Snapshot
- Matchup: Los Angeles Lakers @ Cleveland Cavaliers
- Date & Time: Wednesday, January 28, 7:00 PM ET
- Venue: Rocket Arena, Cleveland, Ohio
- Broadcast: ESPN
Key Storylines
- Donovan Mitchell’s scoring binge has powered a four-game winning streak for Cleveland. His shot volume and efficiency have spiked while playmaking duties have expanded without Darius Garland on the floor.
- Garland’s right toe sprain keeps him on the shelf for this game, shifting ball-handling duties to Mitchell, Craig Porter Jr., and other creators. While Garland is an excellent basketball player, his absence has yet to impact the Cavaliers too negatively in terms of wins and losses.
- Los Angeles continues its road trip with a fifth consecutive road game here. The Lakers are 3-1 on their trip so far, with Luka Dončić carrying a massive usage load. Reaves has been out, removing a secondary pick-and-roll initiator and a valuable spacer.
- Frontcourt battle: Deandre Ayton’s finishing and glass work will be put to the test against Jarrett Allen's strength. The Lakers will benefit from the absence of Evan Mobley, who is expected to be out for the next two weeks or so with a calf injury. Cleveland will have to overcome the absence of the regining Defensive Player of the Year to continue its winning ways.
Head-to-Head & Betting Trends
- This is the first of two regular-season meetings scheduled between the Lakers and Cavs this season and the only one scheduled at Rocket Arena.
- The Lakers are 25-20 against the spread so far this season.
- Cleveland is tied for the worst record in the NBA against the spread this season at 18-30.
- The over is 26-19 in games involving the Lakers this season.
- The under is 26-22 in Cavaliers games during the 2025-26 campaign.
Lakers vs Cavaliers Model Projection
Score Projection: Los Angeles Lakers 114 – Cleveland Cavaliers 118
Win Probability: Los Angeles Lakers 44%, Cleveland Cavaliers 56%
Final Thoughts
If Evan Mobley was healthy, I'd expect this to be a lopsided game in Cleveland's favor. But with Mobley out, I'll just lay the 2.5 points with the Cavs, expecting them to make winning plays late to overcome the scoring barrage of Doncic. I'd expect Jarrett Allen to render Deandre Ayton ineffective for the most part in this contest, allowing the Cavs to control the glass and get enough second chance looks to pull out a win on their home floor.
