Lawrence Lui meets Hector Santiago in a bantamweight preliminary bout at UFC Shanghai on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Lui arrives with an 8-1 record, a five-fight winning streak, and experience from a successful Road to UFC campaign. Santiago enters at 6-1 and brings serious stopping power, having earned five of his six professional victories by knockout or TKO. Polymarket traders have installed Lui as the clear favorite, but Santiago’s aggressive striking gives this matchup plenty of intrigue.
Polymarket currently lists Lui at 73¢, representing an implied win probability of 73%, while Santiago is priced at 28¢. The market hasn't generated much trading volume, so the displayed prices should be treated as a developing consensus rather than a deeply established assessment.

Lui’s recent results provide a fairly clear picture of his development. He earned decisions over Qinghe Zhang and Sulangrangbo, with a second-round stoppage of Van Y Nghiem between those victories. The win over Sulangrangbo at UFC 325 forced Lui to compete through a close, physical three-round fight at the UFC level. He completed seven of 15 takedown attempts while landing 52 of 150 significant strikes.
Those striking numbers were ordinary, but they also show why Lui can be difficult to beat. He does not need to win a pure kickboxing match for 15 minutes. He can change levels, push an opponent to the fence, and turn an uncertain striking round into a clear control round.
Lui also owns a useful three-inch reach advantage. From an orthodox stance, he can work behind straight punches and long kicks without standing directly in Santiago’s preferred pocket. His striking accuracy of 39% leaves room for improvement, but his distance management, pace and wrestling give him several paths to bank rounds.
Santiago has five knockout or TKO wins, including four first-round finishes. He stopped Pedro Freitas in the opening round, did the same to Pedro Sousa in LFA, and needed only 29 seconds to finish Thiago Santos. After suffering a second-round rear-naked choke loss to Maycon Alcino in December 2025, Santiago returned with a unanimous decision over Fernando Henrique and a first-round stoppage of Paulo Nogueira in May 2026.
Santiago’s compact frame helps him generate force in short exchanges. He throws sharp knees to the body and appears most dangerous when an opponent retreats in a straight line or remains within punching range after completing a combination. Lui must respect that power, particularly during the opening five minutes. A careless entry could leave him exposed to an uppercut, knee, or short counter.
The larger question is how Santiago responds once Lui starts mixing up his attacks. Santiago’s lone defeat came by submission, and there is limited evidence of his takedown defense. Lui does not need to become a submission specialist. Repeated entries, mat returns, and fence pressure can drain Santiago’s legs while reducing the force behind his punches. Santiago is also making his UFC debut after joining the matchup as a late replacement, whereas Lui has already fought under the UFC banner and completed three Road to UFC contests.
My projection gives Lui a 78% chance to win. Santiago’s power prevents this from being a routine favorite selection, but Lui has the more reliable round-winning tools.
