Ailin Perez, the Argentine contender, has emerged as one of the division’s most persistent grapplers. Over her last five fights, she has demonstrated an ability to repeatedly secure takedowns, control position, and grind out decisions. Her approach relies on forward pressure, wrestling entries, and consistent top control to neutralize opponents and rack up points round after round. Perez trains hard and speaks confidently about her chances, stating she expects to dominate wherever the fight goes and backing herself to potentially finish fights early.
Macy Chiasson brings significant physical advantages into this fight. Standing at 5’11” with a 72” reach, Chiasson is noticeably taller than Perez. Her skill set centers on striking at range, using long jabs and kicks to keep opponents at bay. Chiasson has shown she can land hard shots and can mix in her grappling, but has historically struggled when pressed into extended wrestling sequences by elite takedown artists. In her last two bouts, she faced tough competition and came up short, losing by decision and subsequently entering this fight with a point to prove.
Chiasson’s camp has emphasized conditioning and tactical improvements during fight week, with the Dallas native working on VO2 max endurance and strategic striking to cope with Perez’s forward movement. However, Perez’s game plan is straightforward and effective: close distance, secure clinches or takedowns, and maintain control. If she can implement that plan successfully, Chiasson’s reach advantage may not be enough to keep her out of danger.
Another subplot to this bout concerns weight management. Perez has publicly stated she will not fight if Chiasson misses the bantamweight limit, referencing her opponent’s past issues in making weight. This adds a layer of psychological tension to fight week, though the bout currently remains scheduled at 135 pounds. Should Chiasson make weight cleanly, the mental advantage may still favor Perez, who seems firmly focused on earning a top-five position with a victory.
Given their differing styles, this fight likely comes down to the effectiveness of Perez’s grappling versus Chiasson’s striking and range control. Perez’s ability to secure takedowns and maintain top control has been a defining feature of her success. Her relentless pressure and momentum will make it difficult for Chiasson to dictate the pace on the feet. Over the course of three rounds, Perez should be able to outwork Chiasson by controlling the center of the Octagon, getting the fight to the canvas repeatedly, and limiting her opponent’s offensive success. I'll take Perez to win by decision on Saturday in Mexico City.
