Injuries a major factor
The largest concern with backing San Diego is New York’s offense. Over its last 10 games, the Yankees have hit .274 with a .407 slugging percentage and 12 home runs, while the Padres have hit only .213 with a .322 slugging percentage and six homers. That difference keeps this from becoming a high-confidence play. Still, New York is missing Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, and Trent Grisham aggravated his right hamstring Friday. With another regular potentially unavailable, the gap between these offenses is smaller than the recent team numbers suggest.

Robbie Ray enters Saturday at 11-7 with a 3.14 ERA across 149 innings. He has struck out 126 hitters and owns a 1.30 WHIP. His strikeout rate is lower than it was during his peak seasons, but his overall results have remained strong. More importantly for Saturday, Ray has been providing consistent length.
His latest appearance came against Tampa Bay on August 30, when he allowed one run on three hits across six innings. That continued a productive stretch in which Ray has generally given San Diego a chance to stay close through the middle innings. He allowed two earned runs over 5.1 innings against Pittsburgh in the previous outing and one earned run across six innings against the Mets before that.
Ray will face a Yankees lineup that has been considerably more productive than San Diego recently, and Ben Rice remains one of its primary power threats. Rice has 36 home runs this season. Luis Garcia and Jazz Chisholm have also been producing lately, so Ray cannot simply coast through New York’s depleted batting order.
Rodón has pitched well when available in 2026, carrying a 4-3 record with a 3.20 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 59.2 innings. Opposing hitters are batting just .187 against him, and his strikeout rate sits at 9.6 per nine innings. Those numbers make him a major reason this game is priced close to even.
There is still some uncertainty surrounding how deep Rodón can go in games right now. He worked just 4.2 innings against Boston in his latest outing, allowing two earned runs on three hits. That followed starts of four innings on August 23 and four innings on August 18 as the Yankees eased him back after elbow inflammation. His effectiveness has generally been good, but New York may again need significant work from the bullpen.
New York’s injury list remains one of the most important pieces of this game. Aaron Judge is on the 60-day injured list because of a rib injury, while Giancarlo Stanton remains out with a calf issue. Fernando Cruz, Ryan Weathers, Kervin Castro, and Clarke Schmidt are also unavailable.
Grisham became the newest concern Friday. He left the series opener after aggravating his right hamstring, an injury that had already caused him to miss time earlier this season. An MRI was expected, leaving his Saturday availability doubtful at best as of the latest updates. Losing another regular bat would further reduce New York’s depth.
George Lombard Jr. recently returned after dealing with a hamstring problem of his own, while Spencer Jones could see increased time in center field if Grisham is unavailable.
San Diego needed 10 innings to win Friday, with Luis Campusano hitting a two-run walk-off homer against Paul Blackburn. Max Fried had held San Diego to one run over 5.2 innings, while Walker Buehler gave the Padres five innings of one-run baseball.
The important Saturday angle is bullpen availability. San Diego used Adrian Morejón and Mason Miller late, with Miller working two innings. New York also had to rely heavily on its relief corps before Blackburn handled the 10th, in what was the second straight extra-inning game for New York. That gives both managers an incentive to get length from their starters, while Ray has shown himself to be more capable of delivering length of late.
