Milwaukee clinched the NL Central yesterday with a 5-1 win over Pittsburgh and a Cubs loss to the Braves. The Brewers can now turn their attention to securing the NL’s No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, while the Pirates sit seven games back in the Wild Card race with just 11 games remaining.
For our Brewers vs Pirates prediction, I’m taking Milwaukee -0.5 through the first five innings. Below, I’ll explain why and break down the biggest storylines heading into Wednesday’s matchup.

Milwaukee’s offense has been on fire this month, and the Brewers have been great against right-handed pitching all season. They lead MLB with a 113 wRC+ against righties, so I like their chances of getting some runs on Jared Jones early.
Logan Henderson Is on a Roll
Henderson has been dominant lately, posting a 2.03 ERA and 0.65 WHIP since the beginning of August. The Brewers have also won 12 of his last 14 starts, so I trust him to keep Pittsburgh’s offense in check through the first five.

There’s plenty to break down in Wednesday’s matchup before making our MLB predictions, starting with two pitchers who have been nearly unhittable lately.
Both Logan Henderson and Jared Jones come into Wednesday’s matchup pitching really well. Henderson has been great all year, going 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 0.78 WHIP, but he’s somehow been even better lately.
In two September starts, both against a very good Cubs lineup, Henderson has a 1.50 ERA and 0.50 WHIP. He most recently held Chicago to zero earned runs over five innings, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts and one walk in an 8-6 Brewers win.
Jones has been just as impressive this month. He’s thrown 13 innings without allowing an earned run, giving up only four hits and three walks while striking out 17. That’s a pretty big turnaround for a pitcher who is 4-6 with a 4.10 ERA and 1.17 WHIP overall this season.
The question is whether Jones can keep it going. He had a 7.40 ERA and 1.94 WHIP in August, and Milwaukee already got to him once during that stretch. If one of these two pitchers is due to come back down to earth tonight, my money is on Jones.
Milwaukee’s red-hot offense might be the biggest difference between these two teams right now. The Brewers enter Wednesday averaging an MLB-best 7.46 runs per game in September, while also leading the league with a .298 team batting average and .866 OPS this month.
Brice Turang has been a huge part of that surge. The second baseman is hitting an unbelievable .415 with a .571 OBP and 1.230 OPS since September 1.
Pittsburgh’s offense has been going in the opposite direction. The Pirates are averaging just 3.85 runs per game this month and have been held to two runs or fewer in six of their last 10 games, including a combined three total runs in Jones’ last two starts.
The biggest unknown in this game might be motivation. Milwaukee (94-57) clinched the NL Central last night and is also in great shape for a first-round bye, sitting 5.5 games ahead of Atlanta with just 11 games left.
However, there’s still plenty for the Brewers to play for. They’re two games ahead of the Dodgers (92-59) for the NL’s No. 1 seed and also hold the tiebreaker over LA. That would give Milwaukee home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs, which could be especially important considering the Brewers are 52-26 at American Family Field this season.
Milwaukee may also want to wrap up the No. 1 seed sooner rather than later so it can give some key players a little extra rest before October.
Pittsburgh (75-76) is in a much different spot. The Pirates are seven games back of San Diego for the final Wild Card spot with only 11 games remaining, so their playoff hopes are just about gone. Still, I’d expect them to have some fight left as they look to play spoiler against a division rival and finish the season on a high note.
There’s always some concern about a letdown after clinching a division title, but Milwaukee still has the NL’s No. 1 seed to play for. The Brewers also have a pretty clear offensive edge in this matchup, and I trust Logan Henderson more than Jared Jones despite how well both have pitched lately.
I’m taking Milwaukee -0.5 through the first five innings, currently priced at 49¢ on Polymarket and playable up to 53¢. I expect Henderson to keep Pittsburgh quiet early while the Brewers’ red-hot offense does enough against Jones to grab a lead through five.
