Marlins vs Diamondbacks Prediction & Preview: Corbin Burnes Makes 2nd Start Of 2026

Miami arrives in Arizona to face the Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Marlins improved to 74-76 on Sunday by rallying past the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4, with Agustín Ramírez ending the game on a 2-run homer in the ninth. Miami also beat Los Angeles 4-3 a day earlier, giving it consecutive wins over a Dodgers club that entered the weekend on an 8-game winning streak. Arizona is 79-71 but has dropped 2 straight after consecutive losses to Texas, leaving the Diamondbacks 2 games behind San Diego for the final National League Wild Card position. Monday's game at Chase Field is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET, with Sandy Alcantara set to face Corbin Burnes.
Why Our Model Sees Value:
“Arizona's overall record and home-field advantage deserve respect, but the current price appears to give too much weight to those factors and too little to the unusual circumstances surrounding Burnes' workload. Burnes is making only his 2nd MLB start since Tommy John surgery, while Miami has already swept Arizona once this season and enters Monday after taking 2 straight from Los Angeles.”
Market Overvaluing Arizona
Polymarket currently has Miami priced at 46¢, which translates to roughly a 46% implied chance of a Marlins victory. Arizona is priced at 55¢, with more than $13,000 in volume reported on the market. My projection makes this game much closer to a coin flip, putting Miami at 51.5%. That creates a 5.5% difference between the model and the available Marlins price, enough to make Miami the preferred side at the current number.
Which Corbin Burnes Will We Get?
There is an important distinction between Burnes being healthy enough to start and Burnes being ready for a normal ace-level workload. He returned from Tommy John surgery on September 8 after 464 days between MLB starts and worked only 3 innings on 57 pitches. Burnes allowed no runs, but he issued 2 walks, gave up 2 hits and was removed well before facing a lineup for a 3rd time. Arizona had planned for roughly 60-65 pitches in that outing. Even with a modest increase Monday, the Diamondbacks may need considerably more bullpen coverage than they would behind a fully built-up starter.

Backing Miami when making a Marlins vs Diamondbacks prediction does require accepting some recent risk with Alcantara, which is why my projections disagree with our in-house quantitative model. The right-hander is 13-10 with a 3.78 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 143 strikeouts across 200 innings this season, giving the Marlins far more established workload certainty than Arizona has with Burnes. His recent results, however, have gone in the wrong direction.
Alcantara allowed 7 earned runs across 4 1/3 innings against the Mets on September 8 after giving up 4 runs in 6 innings at Kansas City. Over his past 7 starts, he has a 4.15 ERA, and his strikeout production has also dipped. That keeps this from being a comfortable Miami projection. Still, Alcantara has thrown at least 6 innings in 4 of his past 5 outings, giving Miami a reasonable chance to avoid asking too much from its relief staff early.
Burnes' name carries obvious weight, but his current circumstances matter more than his résumé. Monday will be just his 2nd appearance of 2026 following his lengthy recovery from elbow surgery and a later teres major strain. In his return against Kansas City, Burnes threw 35 strikes among 57 pitches while completing 3 scoreless innings.
The Diamondbacks cannot reasonably treat him like a pitcher ready for 100 pitches yet. If Miami can extend at-bats, force deep counts and get Burnes out after 4 or 5 innings, the shape of the game changes.
Miami's past 2 games offer a better reason for optimism than its longer recent record. The Marlins scored 4 runs Saturday to end Los Angeles' 8-game winning streak, then scored 4 runs across the final 2 innings Sunday to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 6-4 victory. Ramírez supplied the walk-off homer Sunday, while Xavier Edwards, Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja all contributed during the ninth-inning comeback.
Otto Lopez is another hitter worth watching. He entered Sunday hitting .310 and went 6-for-7 across the first 2 games of the Dodgers series. Against a starter whose pitch count remains restricted, hitters who consistently put the ball in play and extend innings become especially useful.
Arizona has far more at stake in the standings. Sunday's 7-6 loss to Texas dropped the Diamondbacks to 79-71 and 2 games behind San Diego for the final NL Wild Card position. Arizona did rally from a 7-1 deficit and brought the tying run within reach, so their lineup remains dangerous. Nolan Arenado hit a 3-run homer, while Tim Tawa and Jordan Lawlar contributed extra-base hits during the comeback.
The roster has also changed quickly. Arizona designated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment after an injury-filled season in which he hit .210 with 2 home runs and 22 RBIs. Zac Gallen has been shifted to the bullpen after struggling, while several pitchers have only recently returned from the injured list.
Miami has one more data point working in its favor: it swept Arizona in their June series. The Marlins won those 3 games by scores of 10-6, 8-0 and 2-0. A June series should not carry excessive weight in a September projection, particularly with both rosters changing over the summer, but it does show that Arizona has yet to beat Miami this season.
Arizona is the better team by full-season record and Alcantara's recent form is a legitimate concern. Even so, a 46¢ Miami price asks the Marlins to win less than half the time by a fairly wide margin. With Burnes still operating under workload restrictions, Miami coming off consecutive wins against Los Angeles and the Marlins holding a 3-0 season record against Arizona, my estimate lands at 51.5%. At 46¢, that is enough value to back Miami to win, with 50¢ serving as the highest price I would play.
