The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians meet Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field with the AL Central race separated by just a half-game. Chicago enters at 77-74, while Cleveland sits at 77-75. The White Sox opened the series with a 7-3 win Monday, but Cleveland answered Tuesday with a 7-6 walk-off victory on Brayan Rocchio’s two-run double in the ninth. Wednesday’s finale is a huge one, because there is almost no separation between these teams in the standings with fewer than 2 weeks left in the regular season.
Why Our Model Sees Value:

“Cleveland’s advantage with Parker Messick over Anthony Kay, combined with Kay’s recent struggles and Cleveland’s improved production at the plate, appears worth more than the current 63¢ price.”
Cleveland Should Be Bigger Favorites
Polymarket currently has Cleveland priced at 63¢, representing an implied probability of about 63%, while Chicago is available at 38¢. The market has drawn roughly $11,300 in total trading volume. My projection puts Cleveland at 68%, creating a 5% edge over the current Guardians price.
Messick Makes the Difference
The largest reason for the gap is the starting pitching. Messick owns an 11-9 record with a 2.51 ERA and 178 strikeouts, compared with Kay at 9-9 with a 4.53 ERA and 118 strikeouts. Kay has also been considerably worse away from Chicago, posting a 5.35 road ERA, and his post-All-Star-break ERA stands at 5.01.

Messick has been one of Cleveland’s most dependable starters. Beyond the 2.51 season ERA, he has held opponents to 131 hits in 172 1/3 innings while striking out 178 and walking 47. His 1.03 WHIP illustrates how difficult it has been for opponents to consistently put runners on base against him. At home, Messick has a 2.79 ERA across 87 innings.
His recent outings have been particularly steady. Messick allowed 1 earned run over 5 1/3 innings against Minnesota on September 11 after recording 12 strikeouts over 6 innings against Detroit in his previous start. Before that, he held Kansas City and the Angels to 1 earned run apiece. Cleveland should reasonably expect him to provide considerably more length Wednesday than Chicago has recently received from Kay.
There is one opening for Chicago. Messick has allowed left-handed hitters to bat .251 against him compared with just .192 for right-handed hitters. The White Sox have several left-handed bats they can use, including Kyle Teel, Munetaka Murakami, Andrew Benintendi and Colson Montgomery. Chicago's lineup construction gives it a possible route to creating traffic against a pitcher who otherwise has few obvious weak points.
Kay’s current form is the clearest concern for Chicago and for those making MLB predictions backing them. He lasted only 4 innings against St. Louis on September 11, giving up 5 hits and 3 earned runs in a 7-3 loss. That followed starts in which Minnesota scored 5 earned runs against him in 4 1/3 innings and Houston scored 5 earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
There is also a sharp platoon split worth watching. Left-handed hitters have produced only a .525 OPS against Kay this season, but right-handed hitters own an .862 OPS against him with 18 home runs. That creates a favorable setup for Cleveland hitters such as Jo Adell, while switch hitters José Ramírez, Angel Martínez and Brayan Rocchio can operate from the right side.
Kay has performed better in day games, recording a 3.15 ERA in that setting, so his profile is not entirely negative. He has also registered a 3.12 ERA against AL Central clubs this year. Those numbers are important counterpoints, but his current form and 5.35 road ERA carry more weight in my projection for Wednesday.
Cleveland has hit 13 home runs across its last 10 games while batting .241 and slugging .411. Travis Bazzana has been at the center of that production, hitting .441 over that stretch with 5 home runs and 14 RBIs. Steven Kwan has produced a .350/.409/.525 slash line during the same period.
Bazzana carried that production into Tuesday's game with 2 home runs, while Adell also went deep. Rocchio eventually ended the game with his two-run double in the ninth. Cleveland did not dominate from start to finish, but getting meaningful production from several parts of the order is encouraging ahead of another game against a left-handed starter.
Chicago's offense has been less consistent recently, batting .215 over its last 10 games with 10 home runs. Randal Grichuk has been one of the exceptions, hitting .423 over that stretch, while Sam Antonacci has hit .353. Miguel Vargas is also coming off a 3-RBI performance Tuesday after homering in Monday's victory. Cleveland cannot assume Chicago's offense will stay quiet, especially after the White Sox scored 13 runs across the first 2 games of this series.
Cleveland enters Wednesday with Chase DeLauter listed day-to-day because of a hamstring issue. Rhys Hoskins is on the 10-day injured list with a back issue, while reliever Colin Holderman remains on the 15-day injured list with a wrist injury. Chicago is without reliever Huascar Brazoban because of a lat injury, while catcher Joey Bart remains on the 10-day injured list with a hand issue.
Bullpen availability also deserves attention after Tuesday's dramatic finish. Cleveland used Cade Smith for 1 2/3 innings after earlier appearances from several relievers. Chicago asked Grant Taylor for 1 2/3 innings, and he surrendered the decisive 2 runs in the ninth. A longer outing from Messick would have extra value for Cleveland by reducing the burden on a relief group that worked heavily Tuesday.
Cleveland has the starting pitching advantage, the hotter group of key hitters, and home field for the series finale. Chicago has enough left-handed offense to make Messick work, and its season-long run differential warns against treating the Guardians as an overwhelming favorite. At the current 63¢ Polymarket price, however, Cleveland is still below my 68% win estimate.
Prediction: Cleveland Guardians 5, Chicago White Sox 3. The recommended play is Cleveland to win at 63¢, playable through 65¢.
