Starting pitching will be key
The case for Arizona rests mostly on the starting pitchers. Houston deserves credit for its recent run, especially a pitching staff that has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of its last nine games, but Pecko is a much less proven starter than many of the arms responsible for that stretch. He has made only three MLB appearances, allowing three home runs and nine walks across 13 innings. Arizona’s offense has been poor recently, yet Pecko’s control issues give the Diamondbacks opportunities to create baserunners without requiring several hard-hit balls in succession.

Pfaadt has been one of Arizona’s steadier options in a season where the rotation has dealt with major injuries. He rebounded from a rough outing against the Cubs by allowing two runs over six innings against Philadelphia on August 31. His season record now stands at 7-2 with a 3.49 ERA.
That stability matters because Houston has one of baseball’s most dangerous individual hitters in Yordan Alvarez. The Astros star entered the weekend hitting .316 with 37 home runs and 94 RBI, along with an on-base percentage above .430. Pfaadt cannot afford free passes in front of Alvarez, Isaac Paredes, Christian Walker, and Jeremy Pena. If he forces Houston to string hits together rather than giving away baserunners, Arizona’s position improves considerably.
Pecko is still very early in his major-league career. The 24-year-old right-hander is 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA across three appearances and has 6.2 strikeouts and 6.2 walks per nine innings. He allowed two earned runs on three hits over five innings against the Mets in his latest start, which was a step forward, but his overall command remains the main concern.
The rookie has allowed three home runs and nine walks in 13 MLB innings. Arizona has struggled to turn opportunities into runs recently, yet Pecko’s lack of stability offers chances for the Diamondbacks to get men aboard. Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo, Gabriel Moreno, Ketel Marte, and Jordan Lawlar give Arizona enough weaponry to capitalize if Pecko works behind in counts.
Pecko does have legitimate raw ability. His fastball can reach 98 mph, and his arsenal also includes a sweeper and an upper-80s cutter. He struck out 86 batters with 28 walks across 82 2/3 minor-league innings before his promotion. The question Saturday is whether he can consistently locate those pitches against an Arizona lineup badly needing a productive night.
There is no way around Arizona’s recent offensive slide. The Diamondbacks scored one run in each of their last four games, including Friday’s 3-1 loss. Over the last 10 games, Arizona is batting .208 with a .328 slugging percentage and averaging 6.6 hits per game.
There are still encouraging pieces. Lawlar has hit .321 with a .643 slugging percentage over his last 10 games, while Lars Nootbaar has driven in eight runs during that span. Marte has also returned after dealing with knee inflammation, adding another accomplished bat to the lineup. Arizona does not need an offensive explosion for this prediction to work. Four or five runs could be enough if Pfaadt delivers another quality outing.
Houston has won three straight and seven of its last nine, and that recent run has leaned heavily on run prevention. Astros pitchers own a 2.97 ERA over the last 10 games, and Friday’s staff held Arizona to three hits. Cristian Javier struck out eight over five innings in the opener before the bullpen handled the final four frames without allowing a run.
Josh Hader remains the biggest late-inning obstacle for opposing hitters. He recorded his 250th career save Friday and improved to 23-for-23 in save chances this season while carrying a 0.70 ERA. That makes the first six innings especially important for Arizona. Falling behind and asking this struggling offense to chase Houston late is a poor formula.
The Astros did lose a major bullpen piece this week. Steven Okert was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hamstring strain after posting a 2.13 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 68 appearances. Houston still has quality late-game arms, but Okert’s absence reduces the depth available between the starter and Hader. Bryan King was recalled to fill the roster opening.
