The Pelicans’ first nine seasons saw it notch just two winning seasons, with the ceiling coming in 2018 with a sound defeat in the conference semifinals. Ex-Hornets player Willie Green has the reins now as head coach and will look to get the team to the top for the first time.

LSU Tigers

Louisiana has a number of notable schools competing in NCAA Division I athletics, but the Tigers competing out of Louisiana State University are the most notable. LSU was the first SEC school to win national championships in each of the three biggest NCAA sports. LSU has 44 national championships recognized by the NCAA, making it officially the ninth-most-successful school in the nation.

LSU is a force in basketball, football, and baseball picking up an SEC Championship in each one in recent years. That accomplishment would be huge on its own, but the kicker is a 2019 NCAA National Championship in football.

Louisiana State University vs. Tulane University is arguably the most storied rivalry in Louisiana sports. The first intercollegiate football game in the state’s history was played by the two teams in 1896 and the rivalry was kept alive for over 100 years with the Battle for the Rag.

The Lady Techsters won three national championships between 1981 and 1988, with that success stretching into the 1990s. History of Sports Betting in Louisiana

Louisiana is relatively progressive when it comes to gaming, with the state being one of just two in the United States that has casinos legal statewide. While one might have expected this to suggest that sports betting would be quickly adopted by the state, that hasn’t actually been the case.

In 2018, the United States Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. The act had previously delivered a nationwide ban on sports betting, and its removal allowed individual states to legalize sports betting within their borders. It wasn’t until June 2021 that Louisiana’s state government passed motions to legalize sports betting in the state. These were signed into law by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. From there, the process of regulation began through the Louisiana Gaming Control Board which licenses sports betting sites to operate in the state.

While this dragged on for over a year in some states, it moved relatively quickly in Louisiana. The first retail sportsbooks opened in October 2021 and began taking wagers. From there, online sports betting became operational in January 2022.
