The allure of online Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) has reached the West Coast, especially the Golden State of California. Ever since 2015, California's legislative body has been toying with the idea of DFS legalization. While there was a glimmer of hope in early 2016, the progress has been slow, primarily due to the political clout of key gambling stakeholders.
Why the Delay in DFS Legalization?
California's rich gambling ecosystem boasts of card rooms, racetracks, and tribal groups. Collectively, these entities contribute billions to the state's revenue. However, these stakeholders often find themselves at odds, with each trying to ensure that they don't cede an unfair advantage to the other with the introduction of DFS. The current unregulated state of DFS websites seems to favor these groups, but the repercussions for California are undeniable. With potential tax revenue slipping away, the state is at a loss.
However, the current status quo isn't necessarily negative for Californian players. They continue to have access to a plethora of sports leagues, reaping the benefits of DFS offerings.

While the DFS landscape remains mired in regulatory debates, players have a vast array of sports leagues at their disposal.
Deciphering the DFS Legislation Maze
Despite the initial enthusiasm in 2016, the push for formal DFS legalization in California has come to a standstill. But the DFS operators are undeterred. They fervently argue that DFS isn't just a game of chance but one of skill. They reference the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2016, which, interestingly, permits real-money fantasy sports.
